Guest guest
This article will interest our ladies more than men, but for those men who read our posts, you may want to share it with your wives. I know that our friend Jackie tested positive for BRA CA and had a hystermectomy because it ran in her family. I ran across this article from the UK (my friend Beth over there says she can hear me snoring - not yet, Beth, but soon. LOL) about new tests designed to diagnose ovarian cancer sooner. September 22, 2010...... " Ovarian cancer screening programs could also improve detection rates and lead to earlier diagnosis. The landmark UK Collaborative Trial of Ovarian Cancer Screening (UKCTOCS) compared two strategies for screening women aged 50-74 years: an annual check of levels of CA125, with transvaginal ultrasound as a second-line test, and annual screening with transvaginal ultrasound alone. The study of more than 200,000 women showed that both screening strategies were feasible on a large scale and had “encouraging performance characteristics”. The sensitivity was similar for both, while the specificity was higher in the CA125/follow-up ultrasound strategy than the ultrasound-alone strategy. " Transvaginal ultrasonography is the investigation of choice for evaluating suspected uterine adnexal lesions or masses, but it has some limitations. The presence of septum or papillary projections or solid components in the lesions, combined with the presence of blood flow within the lesion as detected by color Doppler assessment of blood flow, means that the lesion is likely to be malignant rather than benign. However, as the author of one literature review of the subject reported, the detection of vascularity within the papillary projection of a malignant tumor may not be detected when it is very small, leading to missed opportunities to diagnose cancer at as early a stage as possible.
