Guest guest
Hi - My daughter just began high school this year, and so far, I believe that we have good plans in place. For starters, 7th and 8th grade were the absolute pits!!!!! She has ADHD, OCD and now TS. She has big academic needs, so our story is a little different. But, she works with the ED teacher (emotional disabilities). This is wonderful because everything is completely individualized, and they are completely sensitive to her emotional needs, while pushing her to do her best. Is there an ED program at the school? In this program, they can do whatever they want. For example, first semester, she has had a late start time. Also, she takes social studies and math individually with the ED teacher. She is mainstreamed for a couple of other classes. Next semester, because she is ready, she will be mainstreamed for a couple of more. This flexibility has helped my daughter's anxiety a lot. She really feels that there is a safety net there to catch her should she need. Her middle school offered no such program, and it was SOOO much harder in every way. I would imagine that all high school's need to have this kind of program.....but I am not sure. If they are going to fight you on this, I think you may need to get an advocate or someone with some more power to get you what you need. Good luck!
