Guest guest
I have never and will never get a flu shot. They claim it is safe for those with autoimmune diseases because it isn't a " live " virus. I believe the nose spray vaccine is made from live viruses and not recommended. Should people with chronic arthritis and autoimmune diseases get a flu shot? http://arthritis.about.com/od/arthqa/f/flushots.htm a On Oct 18, 2005, at 7:10 PM, eandsspivey wrote: > Is it safe to take a flu shot? Guest guest
Last year is the first time I've ever had a flu shot. I was 65 and decided I'd better not push my luck any further. Earlier I also a pneumonia shot, my first one. I didn't have any adverse side effects at all. I couldn't even tell I had gotten either shot. I also didn't get pneumonia or the flu. I plan to get another flu shot this year, as soon as they get the vaccine in at my doctor's office. On the news, they keep talking about a pandemic of the bird flu. They talk about how unprepared we are for it and that it could be as bad as the one in 1918 that killed millions of people. So why aren't they getting prepared instead of just scaring us about it? Guest guest
Media scare tactics are making people so scared that everyone is running to get flu shots. The pharmaceutical companies are loving it. Stock analysts are telling investors that the companies that make the vaccines are the ones to invest in. Isn't it ironic that they start filling the airwaves with scares of a bird flu that may NEVER affect humans right when it the flu vaccine season? a On Oct 18, 2005, at 8:23 PM, Sue wrote: > Last year is the first time I've ever had a flu shot. Guest guest
good questions.... I was wondering that myself?? I kind of think that with the symptoms of RA and medications at this point I may not be able to tell if I had the flu anyway! Guest guest
I was advised if you are on medication that dampens down your immune system you should have a flu jab, I got flu several years back and it took me months to recover from it so I always have one. It isn't too late for one the 'flu season' doesn't start until Dec, I will have mine next month. Guest guest
I have had annual flu jab for the past 5 years and never had a problem with it, killed vaccines do not cause problems. Having had flu and RA together I would not want to repeat it, I was terribly ill and took months to get better. Re bird flu well the virus hasn't mutated yet and even when it does they do not have a suitable vaccine for it, all they have available is the antiviral medication made by Roche. Roche apparently have stepped up their production and are considering having it made under licence by other companies. I heard on the radio that here in the UK we have millions of doses on order and are taking delivery of 800,000 doses a week. Estimations are that 50,000 people here will die from this pandemic. It is getting closer and has reached Macedonia (Greece) now so it will soon be in the UK. Guest guest
My rheumy always gives me a flu shot. Last year I was just getting off IV antibiotics for an infection that threatened all of my metal joints and was given the shot by the infectious disease doc. I was told to stay off mtx & enbrel for a full week after the shot. Guest guest
I've been taking a flu shot for the last 16 years that I've had RA. The old idea that you can get the flu from the shot is a big bunch of hooey! I've had more than one Rheumy during that time and none have said anything about special treatment or stopping other meds because of the shot. I guess it's just the preference of the administrating physician. Take the shot, there's no reason not to (in most cases)! Guest guest
I got the flu because I was too busy to get the shot and have suffered ever since. That was the trigger for the RA, and I've paid for it in many ways, being in pain 24/7, no job because I was laid off because I 'couldn't do the job', cost all my savings for treatments, on and on..... A flu shot doesn't cost that much but the result of not having one surely can. Dennis ----- Original Message -----

Guest guest
Dear a, Amen to your post about the pharmaceutical companies. Years ago I worked as a medical transcriptionist and we had a local outbreak of pertussis. The papers printed big scary articles about it every day and experts encouraged everyone to make sure their vaccinations were up to date. What was NEVER printed was the fact that the first cases started at a doctor's office from kids who had just had the vaccination. I know at least three people whose kids had seizures after their immunizations and in all cases the doctors refused to report it as an adverse reaction. I'm not saying that immunizations are evil or always dangerous, but it is unfortunate that people can only get one side of the story. You have to make an effort and dig deeper than the nightly news, the local papers and the popular magazines to get the whole story. No doubt vaccinations have saved many lives and in some cases are extremely important, but I hate the extent to which the drug company spin doctors control information. For example, when my kids were little and got the chicken pox, my doctor said that it was absolutely not dangerous unless your child had a compromised immune system. We were told back then that the kids who " die " of it had other problems or one of the sores got infected from neglect or often it was Reyes Syndrome because the mom gave aspirin. Back then my doctor suggested that I invite all the neighborhood kids over so they could catch it and get it over with for the whole neighborhood. Fifteen years later my brother takes his daughter for a check-up and the doctor told him that chicken pox was very dangerous and many children die every year from it. Nothing has changed about the disease--only the public perception of the disease. Why did it change? Because now they have a vaccine for it. Again, I'm not saying it's wrong to immunize your children, but I hate that the public is manipulated--not just by the pharmaceutical companies, but by all big businesses. Thanks, a, for hearing me out. laura a <a54@...> wrote: Media scare tactics are making people so scared that everyone is running to get flu shots. The pharmaceutical companies are loving it.
