Guest guest
Hi folks..I have had RA for the past 6 yrs...been relatively under control of it with MTX, but recently have had some " flares " ..what I am wondering is how do you deal with the pain that occurs at times?? What meds do you take for the pain??..I have recently QUIT vicodin/norcos as they are quite addictive..including the ultrams..am only interested in OTC stuff or herbal, for that matter.. Any suggestions would be much appreciated.. Striving for pain free days...sigh.. Lindy
Guest guest
Hi Lindy, We each react differently to pain and pain killers. My experience for a few years was that Tylenol was enough to keep the pain managable (along with Methotrexate, a biologic (previously Enbrel, then Remicade and now Kineret). I've also consistently been on an anti-inflammatory - currrently Vioxx. The last couple of years I've needed something stronger much of the time (along with prednisone), and I have prescriptions for both Ultram and Vicodin. I don't like the fact that they can be addictive, but I've found that I can take either on an as needed basis. By this point in time I don't feel high or buzzed from either, and can take them or not. If you focus on the OTC, make sure that you follow the dosing instructions (too much tylenol can cause liver problems). If you're on a prescription NSAID, you need to avoid Advil or Aleve. I haven't had any experience with herbs (that are legal) for pain relief. If you find something, be sure to check for interactions with the other things you take. I've found a great drug interaction tool at drugdigest.org - you put in all the stuff you're taking and it tells you all the potential interactions. Good luck in your search for relief!
