Guest guest
> Hi Pat: That last statement says Essentially Cured, and that could throw some people off if they do not understand that what it really means is that you could live for a longer period of time with the new treatments available to us now. I think we have a lot of people still confused over remission and response. I guess thats why we are fortunate enough to have these boards to post and answer questions. In the long run, its great that so much money is being raised so that one day people can say definitley I AM Cured.> Hi all - > Some 20,000 women were in the Nike Women's Marathon in San Francisco yesterday, raising funds for LLS. An article in the San Francico Chronicle said the race is in its seventh year and has raised more than $100 million dollars for leukemia and lymphoma research. The article also included the following information: > ---------------------------- > > Thanks in part to research grants from the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society, the primary recipient of marathon funds, outlooks have improved dramatically for those with blood cancer, society spokeswoman Liz Olsen said. > > Forty years ago, very few children survived leukemia, but now 85 percent live five years or more after diagnosis. Chronic myelogenous leukemia, which once had a survival rate of three years, is now essentially cured, she said. > > > Read more: http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?f=/c/a/2010/10/18/BAMF1FU1CR.DTL#ixzz1\ 2jqOw6WU > > ----------------------------------- > > Some questions for you: > Do you agree that CML is now " essentially cured? The drugs that we have, thanks to the LLS, are 'essentially' a functional cure....for most patients. IF you were diagnosed before Gleevec, you 'essentially' had a death threat hanging over your head...this disease was considered fatal....now it is considered a treatable chronic disease for most patients (diagnosed in the early stage). I think that LLS is giving grants to any researcher that has a worthwhile proposal, including those working on CML, including Dr. Druker. When a cure is found for CML, I think that LLS money will have played a part is that also.....and that they will deserve to stand on a mountain top and yell.......we helped cure CML!! The LLS statement did not say 'cured' period.....I think this statement was a way to show that progress against leukemia is being made and that these funds are making a difference. C.
