Guest guest
October 21, 2010 " Cancer Research UK, has shown that adding two commonly used chemotherapy drugs to traditional radiotherapy can reduce the chance of a patient's tumour coming back by a third. The trial - led by scientists at the University of Birmingham, and the Institute of Cancer Research (ICR) - is the largest of its kind in bladder cancer in the world. Its success could mean fewer patients with invasive bladder cancer will need radical surgery to completely remove their bladder. http://www.medicalnewstoday.com/articles/205759.php _____________________________ October 26, 2010 " Citing projections that by 2030, America's senior population will reach 20 percent of the population - 78 million people - and new survey information showing that Americans feel increasingly helpless about their personal cancer risk as they grow older, the American Institute for Cancer Research (AICR) today highlighted the emerging research showing that even in later life, many cancers can be delayed or prevented through regular physical activity and a plant-based diet. Presented at AICR's annual Research Conference on Food, Nutrition, Physical Activity and Cancer, these research findings reflect the recent surge in the study of diet and activity on cancer's number one risk factor: aging. According to the latest estimates, nearly 4 in 5 cancers are diagnosed after age 55 and by age 65, a person's cancer risk is 10 times that of younger people. Increasingly, research is demonstrating that at any age, individuals can take simple steps - like getting and staying more active and eating more fruits, vegetables and whole grains - that will help delay aging and lower cancer risk. The Foundation General Hospital of the University of Elche, together with researcher Alfredo Carrato, has also collaborated on this project. The patented microchip has the size of a one euro coin, incorporating a small channel along which a sample of blood containing the patient's tumour cells flows. By means of ultrasonic waves focused on a specific zone, these cells, having a density and size different from the rest, concentrate at the point from where they are gathered. 'Large doses of B-complex vitamins could reduce the rate of brain shrinkage by half in elderly people with memory problems and slow the progression of dementia. A two-year clinical trial in England has shown that B vitamins, including B-6, B-12 and folic acid, slow down mild cognitive impairment (MCI), a condition which is a major risk factor for Alzheimer disease and other forms of dementia.
