Hi ,

We are having a beef & beer on October 26th to raise the money for 's

treatments. We sell tickets in advance to get and idea of how many people

will be coming and also to pay for the event. We rent a local church hall

(only $200 for the night) and ask local merchants for items to be raffled

off. We also hire a DJ. It was an excellent party!!! We hold a 50/50. This

year (last year we raised $4,000) we will also put donation jars in different

merchant shops. I will e-mail my phone number to you if you would like to

talk.

Good Luck,

Darlene

I haven't had to be in this position yet, but I know someone who needed to

find volunteer to help do an intensive therapy with her brother (Adult size),

and to get volunteers, she did up a video, made up flyers, and had it

playing, and handed out the flyers explaining her brothers condition, why

they were looking for volunteers, at their Red Cross chapter. People really

jumped on the band wagon to help.

I am wondering if the same kind of idea would work for others, trying to

raise funds?

DO up flyers, post them, do up a video about your child or loved one, maybe

some footage of a HBOT treatment and a brief narrative about what HBOT is,

and distribute and play at blood drives. Maybe people would be willing to

give monetary donations. It would also help to get the word out about HBOT to

areas and people who may never be educated about it.

Just my idea.

- one of the fundraising things we did for josh was to have a group yard

sale. i know that sounds kind of lame, but we gave notice to the customers at

the restaurant & law firm where i work & friends and neighbors, etc. asking them

to donate items for a large yard sale for josh to go to miracle mountain. we

got SO MUCH STUFF!!! Some of our neighbors also baked brownies & cookies to

sell. (and, we put a jar with a sign telling why we were raising the money for

people to just drop " gifts " into). We raised over $900 in one sale & then we

called kidney foundation to come pick up the rest so we weren't left with tons

of stuff to get rid of.

We also were fortunate enough for the newspaper to do a story about josh & they

mentioned we were trying to raise money for hbot. we did receive some kind

donations from that as well.

Good luck!!!

We got our church to set up a fund for our daughter. This way people could

make a tax-exempt donation. We put an article in the local newspaper about

our daughter's condition, including her photo, and what we were hoping to

gain from HBOT and the fact that insurance wouldn't cover it because it was

considered experimental. We sent letters asking for support from local

organizations such as Lion's Club, Rotary, as well as other churches and

temples, etc. The teachers at Hannah's school had fund raising luncheons

amongst themselves (for example, one made soup and all would buy a bowl,

donating what they wished). We sold pins, getting everyone we knew involved,

all over the country. We selected dove pins with mustard seeds inside, based

on the Biblical scripture that if you have faith the size of a mustard seed

you can move mountains. The church bought the pins for us and deducted the

cost of the pins from the money raised. This way we were able to purchase

the pins from the supplier tax-free. These we sold for a minimum donation of

$5. It was very moving to see so many people all around town wearing these

pins.We raised about $18,000 in one month's time. We were unsuccessuful in

this, but depending on where you go and who you know, esp if you go off

season, sometimes oyu can find someone who will let you stay in their

vacation home or company apartment for a month. they get to write off a

month's rent as charitable contribution and have someone care for the place,

you get a place to stay for little or no money. You can also get free air

travel for 1 parent with a child. I know Southwest Airlines will do this for

one roundtrip (at least they used to). You could also look into Miracle

Flights. When we went for HBOT, we had enough for 2 month long stays and all

expanses were paid out of the church account that we had set up. We had no

idea that we would be blessed in such a way, but the out-pouring was

tremendous. Movie theaters will let you do a fundraiser for early morning

movies. Hair salons will sometimes do cut-a-thons. Whereever you go, you

need to consider the cost of housing, food, etc. because that will add up.

I highly recommend staying close to the facility if you are planning to

do a block of treatments because all of your time will be tied up running

back and forth the the HBOT clinic. HBOT stimulates the metabolism, so when

we went, we had time for HBOt, doing exercizes, and eating. My daughter

really needed 3 big meals each day (she had not been eating prior to this,

so it was a very good thing). So by the time I cooked, fed her, cleaned up,

it was time to go back to the clinic and start all over again. Any free time

was filled with schoolwork. Thankfully, though, the school really did not

send much. As far as missing school, it is no problem when the child is

gettng medical treatments. I worried too, but they kept telling me not to

worry and it really was fine. We mailed stuff back as she completed it. Good

luck! I'm sure you will get many good ideas and you'll soon be on your way.

RE: Church Fundraising

I do not want to overstep my bounds on this because this list is for every

person of any faith, or even no faith. That is clear.

However, from my vantage point, I am convinced that every faithful church

has an exceptional obligation to support our children. (I'll avoid

passages right now). To ignore that obligation is specifically unfaithful

to God's plan for us.

Further, faithful churches will receive great blessings in helping these

children for the assistance they give. (or suffer the converse otherwise).

There are a number of reasons for people to suffer. But, it really comes

under the general banner of God's plan. Whether it be to develop us, try

us, or to help someone else during our journey through this life.

You can read some of this insight in my daughter's 's book found at

www.LittlestAngel.com (click on 's Book)

Further, if there is anything I can do to help anyone with this specific

need, I will do whatever I can. This includes providing copies of

's book AT NO CHARGE, to support your fund raising.

We have been very, very blessed to have and her faith with

us. And, I know that as we traveled through our journey, there were many

times that we knew we were literally broke and could not cover her

treatment expenses. But, every time we put her needs first, somehow, we go

new business in that covered her costs. We were always blessed when we had

our backs against the wall, and we put her first.

I do not want to preach this specific thing to everyone, because God's plan

for is undoubtably different than His plan for others. But, I only

present it to demonstrate our lives and how we have been cared for.

There is no scripture in the old, or new testament that supports abandoning

children in need. The scriptures are very specific about this.

Ellen's great letter shows how a group of many hands focused on helping a

child can carry that child without much effort, or sacrifice.

Best Wishes and Blessings to All,

Ed Nemeth

Ed, I agree completely. When I first found out about HBOT, I knew we HAD to

do this, but also felt I was facing a brick wall. I did a little brain

storming with friends/family and it all took off. As you said, it took

little effort on my part. I was an emotional wreck and felt humiliated

asking for help...and having to receive God's blessings instead of give, but

it all took on a life of its own. Ellen

Hello ,

Do you have any professional/voluntary fund raising experience? Does

anyone in your group, so far? Just curious.

Things happen for a reason, and I should let this one go, but I won't.  I wrote

a rather long email concerning me and fund raising, and it got LOST.  I should

leave it lost, but think I will pursue it.

Lottie mentioned I raised some bucks for LLS.  Several years ago they sent me an

invitation to join in their Mother's Day Tea Party fund raiser.  If I raised

over $100.00 I would get a prize.  Well, I raised $2,000.00, surprised the hell

out of me!  The next year, I raised

$6,000.00.  and the third year I raised $10,000.00.  Wow! I was going great

guns!  When I called them and asked for more donation receipts they said they

were not doing tea parties anymore, but I could go their meeting and see how to

raise funds in other ways.  Well, I don't know why if something is working so

well, you would want to stop doing it, and I got on my high horse and didn't do

anything.

This year I signed up for the Totally Baldacious fund raiser, on the internet.

I thought, if I raised a lot of money doing what I had been doing, why change?

Most of the funds I raised were from the sale of raffle tickets for a 2 night

weekend stay at one of 50 Holiday Inns in the states.  So I started to put

together a local getaway, dinner, theater and a night in a down town Cleveland

hotel.  I wrote to the gal in charge and explained what I was doing and told her

I needed forms for businesses that donated.  She wrote back and said this is

strictly an internet fund raiser and if I had other ways to raise money I should

contact my local LLS offices.  Does this sound like a put down to you?  it did

to me.  I don't know why, if I had a huge party, a place and entertainment

donated, and a list of people willing to shave their heads, beards and/or

mustaches off,  then sent the money over the internet, what difference it would

make how the money

was raised??  Was she telling me if I raised $10,000.00 at a party, it would

not be accepted if it wasn't donated on line, little by little?

So, my friends, that was the end of that fund raiser for me.  I think I have had

donated a little under $800.00, before the party idea even hit me. (girls, keep

track of old boy friends, one of mine donated $200.00 and another donated

$100.00)

So now I am back to knitting hats and scarves and selling them, in the past I

have donated about $2500.00 doing this, only this time the money is being

donated to the Women's Auxilliary of the American Legion. I am also heading up

the committee for selling poppies and the bake sale this coming Memorial Day.

Gives me something to do, and believe me, they are truly grateful for every

dollar they get.  Next week we are decorating little Xmas trees that go in a

gift package and get sent to the boys and girls overseas, through the USO.

I think it only fair to say, it is just possible that on two different days I

connected with two different people that were both having a bad day??

Possibly....

Hi Bobby,

First, let me say thanks so much for the terrific job you have done

fund raising for LLS! We all know what a good cause it is--as LLS

played a significant role in the funding of the original Gleevec

research.

As a board member of my local LLS chapter (North Carolina), I have a

little insight into how LLS operates and I suspect you did just reach

the wrong person twice. If you called nationally, I think whoever has

the phone responsibilities just doesn't usually get those kinds of

calls and they just didn't know what to tell you. But the one that

told you to contact your local LLS office did send you in the right

direction. The kind of fund raising you are doing is all done via the

local chapters. The national organization would just do some kind of

big internet only campaign--when they do any. I think if you call

your local chapter and explain what happened and let them know you are

interested in raising funds they would be able to help you. Our

chapter (and others I know of) have individuals who do this type of

fund raising and are well equipped and very happy to handle it. As

you know, you do need forms to give businesses and individuals who

donate as they will want this in order to get a tax deduction. I

would call them before starting any campaign and ask if you could do

this. We've had a number of individuals in our chapter who have done

this type of thing and we are always ecstatic to get an offer of this

type. I don't want people to get the impression that LLS is

uninterested in either fund raising or in finding cures. Most of the

individuals within the organization are very dedicated to the

" mission " . Please don't let one individual who mans some phone at a

national level put a damper on your enthusiasm for the cause. Keep in

mind that she is likely a fairly low paid person who doesn't

understand all the workings of LLS.

I looked at the Totally Baldacious campaign and I think I know what

the issue is--this is internet only as they are handling all donations

online and thus handling the tax-deductibility issue online only.

This means if you get anyone to donate with a check directly to you,

you won't have the ability to give them credit for the donation. But

it doesn't mean you can't collect funds from whoever is willing to

donate without a receipt. But I think you would be better off by

going thru your local chapter and letting them know that you think you

can raise funds for them. Tell them how much you have raised in the

past and I cannot believe they won't be very happy to talk with you.

I'm sure the head of the chapter would be very interested. We don't

get that many offers from people who can raise $10,000. Hey if your

chapter isn't interested--let me know as the North Carolina LLS

chapter will certainly welcome your donations;>)!

Several years ago they sent me an invitation to join in their Mother's Day Tea

Party fund raiser.  If I raised over $100.00 I would get a prize.  Well, I

raised $2,000.00, surprised the hell out of me!  The next year, I raised

> $6,000.00.  and the third year I raised $10,000.00.  Wow! I was going great

guns!  When I called them and asked for more donation receipts they said they

were not doing tea parties anymore, but I could go their meeting and see how to

raise funds in other ways.

Hi Bobby,

You have really done great with your fund raising. I remember the tea party

campaign........maybe everyone should have made it a Mimosa party! (actually I

don't drink, so I don't know what a Mimosa is). I think what happens with an

idea like that is that after a few years it gets stale for some people and they

hate to do the same old thing....so the fund raising peters out. So then they

need a new campaign. But I think Dorothy gave you some good insight about

dealing with the local chapter and being able to do more individual things. For

an individual donating (not a business) I would think that a cancelled check

written to the L & L Soc. would serve for tax purposes....it is all that I have

when I donate to many organizations. But businesses contributing gifts and

services, etc would need something more official.

You seem to have lots of energy to put into this kind of thing, like making

hats, etc.......and there are many worthwhile organizations and projects to

support. Hooray for all you have done.

C.
