So glad to read the above. I had heard a long time ago that RA was

a dormant virus we all have in our systems that is brought about by some

stressful situation in our lives

I think stress brings on most "diseases" in our lives. Our bodies are weakened and become vulnerble. That is when problems veer their ugly heads...

If we had no stss would we be disease free?

No...stress is just when then make their debut..

I have always, always felt that what brought on my JRA was a serious bout of

unhappiness at summer camp. I was really miserable and alone and sitting

for hours in the " trap " (dressing room under the stage) leaning on myhand,

looking in a mirror. Cut off circulation for awhile.

When I went for my checkup before school, two fingers on that hand were

swollen. My mom shrugged it off and didn't want me to say anything, but I

asked the doctor and he said " looks like you have a little arthritis, " and

they did tests-- first came back negative, but then came back positive. I

was 14 and I've had it ever since!

How are you liking your job, Gwen? Holding up o.k. all day?

I get so tired after my six hours at work (only 3 days a week!)that I

have to sleep for an hour right away when I get home. I'm somewhat

newly diagnosed and just took my 4th dose of MTX last night; I'm

hoping that I'll have more energy once it begins to take effect.

Have you had to make adjustments in your career because of the RA?

Re my job: funny you should ask. What job?

We have been on hiatus actually since end of April and though I was supposed

to return, that's just altered-- my position's been eliminated/altered. So

I'm in the job market. Heavy sigh.

But to answer your question re adjustments: no, I've always had very

time-consuming jobs... Most of my flares as an adult have been short-lived

anyway, but in my last position (at a theatre) my boss was very

accommodating and I more or less made my own hours, so most of the time

being late due to morning stiffness was not a problem.

I don't think RA is caused by stress but I know it is exacerbated by stress.

I think the root cause/virus/predisposition/whatever has to be there first though.

Mine was dormant for many, many years until I had chemo in 1999.

That I know was very stressful to the body and mind.

Hugs,

Jacy

I have a history of autoimmune diseases having suffered from severe ulcerative colitis about 9 years ago. The RA seemed to come out of nowhere since I was running a lot, in good shape, my uc had gone into remission a couple of years before. But I have heard that stress brings out these diseases and my pet theory is that the stuff that caused the uc (emotional that is) had gone underground and found another way to express it in my body. I'm pretty good at ignoring things and I think this was my body's way of getting my attention. Did a pretty good job, I think....

My RA took about 10 years to manifest itself to the point where the doctors could make a definitive diagnosis. I started with tendonitis of the left wrist -- it would come and go. Then I had a growth removed from my little finger -- the path report said rheumatoid nodule. But still no definitive blood reports or sustained symptoms. Gradually the symptoms got worse -- so gradually that I thought the way I felt was normal. (My blood count was down to 5.7). It was definitely a slow onset -- nothing I thought would be called a " flare". I've been diagnosed for about 10-12 years and still don't get severe flares. The only way I can tell if I'm getting worse is to compare the way I feel today versus how I felt a month ago, 6 months ago, etc.

In a case like yours Pat I can see where a journal would come in really handy.

Does anyone else use a journal?

I do, but not everyday, more like when something different happens.

Hi Jacy, I read in many books and people

told me that it could be caused by stress and especially by great shocks, etc. events

in your life. Bobbie

So glad to read the

above. I had heard a long time ago that RA was

caused by

stressful situation in our lives. That's

what happened to me!!! 6 months

before

being diagnosed in 1981 there were three stressful

starting out

with my mother's death. Does anybody else

have a similar story?

Thanks for that info.

I don't know if we will ever really know because everyone is so different with these Auto-immune things.

One day...

This is a good subject to talk bout....:) I think my RA stuff occurred

after I had been infected with the Hepatitis B virus (never got the

disease) BUTTTTTT, the virus was in my system...I think I got it from

having acrylic nails done at those salons run by Southeast Asian

people..Hep B is quite prevalent in that part of the world...dirty

instruments, dremel tools, etc..

THESE ARE MY ONLY SUPPOSITIONS...guess the virus just started the ball

rollin'...sigh...:(

from cooky calif..:)
