Didn't think any of us are ever cancer free?  I am PCRU but if I stop the

Gleevec it would cause my PCR to go back up.  We will always have CML just can

get PCRU where it's " not detected " on a blood test. I AM REALLY CONFUSED

NOW!!!!!!!!

But aren't we considered cancer free since no bad cells r detected just like

one who has beat it with chemo treatment??

Karem Abdul-Jabbar was diagnosed in December 2008. After being PCRU (probably

February 2011), he must wait 2 years before he try to stop the medication

according to the STIM trial.

According to the news, he seem to be in good shape (very few side effects)

because he also announced that he's starting a new career as a film maker .

Congratulations Karem!

By saying 100% cancer-free, he means he is in remission, testing zero on the

bone marrow test but still on Gleevec.  I am pretty sure he is not off

medication.

If you are PCRU while still on drugs, I think it's called chemical remission but

it can't be counted as cancer free as you're reliant on the drugs.

There's a trial going on in France where people who have been PCRU on drugs for

at least 4 years are given the opportunity to come off drugs but are closely

monitored. If the CML comes back, they go back onto Glivec or whatever.

Currently, some people have managed to remain in remission for 2 years, drug

free. So that's good news.

My doctor mentioned that study when I saw him yesterday. He said he believes

that we may achieve true remission within a few years.

Come on " Cap "

I looked at the tweet- he says 100% cancer free. But the banner says- cured!(

they are both wrong.  He must be taking different lab tests than the rest of

us.  I'm PCRU and have been for a couple of years and my doc still says "

undetectable " not cancer free.  No test sensitive enough to detect all

leukemia cells.  He may be cured but there is no test to prove it.

I respect him as an amazing athlete, but I think it is irresponsible to send

out the message that he is cured.  Isn't that what O'Neal did a few years

back....and then the CML returned.  We are lucky to be alive and for some of

us- the cancer may actually be gone( a couple of studies where people are

stopping the meds).

Hopefully, someone in the medical community will speak up and correct the

misunderstanding.  But if he is cured....I want to take what he's taking....oh

wait I am- we both take Gleevec.

Anyway- I'm lurking at work so I should get back to work. I'm thankful for

every day I'm still here.  i believe there will be a cure but if there was one-

Lottie, Zavie, Tracey from Canada, Bobby, Skip or another veteran would have

told us long before Kareem.
