Hello,

Thank you, to everyone who mailed or posted warm holiday sentiments. I

too hope that the new year is a wonderful one for all of us who have met

here and our families. Our children's health concerns have caused a lot

of pain, worry and distress for many of our families during this past

year. Others of us have been more fortunate, in that during the year

2000 our children's health has improved greatly. This has been our case.

My son has systemic JRA. The first three years were particularly

troubling as the illness was severe and seemingly unrelenting. Josh

still takes a lot of meds everyday and still has those occasional

periods of more active arthritis. He also has some physical pain and

other symptoms related to decreasing the doses of some of his regular

meds. A few things certainly worried us during these past 12 months.

It's not over yet. Overall though, this was his best year ever. Since

the onset of his JRA back in May, 1995.

I can finally join in with the group of more experienced parents who

have travelled down this path before us and say, from first-hand

experience, that no matter how bad it may get at times there definitely

is hope that things can improve drastically and that your child can one

day be doing much better. Please don't lose hope that this can happen.

Maybe 2001 will be the year that it happens for you and your child.

With Much Aloha,

Georgina

I hope all is well at this moment. I was wondering if you are the parent of

the child with the systematic JRA. I am rather new to the egroup and was

wondering how he is doing? I have a 6 year old who also has the same

condition and has not been doing well lately. They just upped his

prednisone again and is taking 8 mg a day. He has been on prednisone

forever. As a matter of fact I recall him being off of it once for 4

months. He's been diagnosed since he was 2 1/2. The reason I am writing is

because if I am right - everything I read about your son is almost the same

as my son and I can really sympathize for this child. We have been going

through sleepless nights for so long, that I can not remember going through

a night with sleep. After new years his doctor is going to try on changing

his meds, because obviously with all that he is on, it just is not working.

He does not want to go to his next doctors visit, with fear that they will

keep him there again. (2 hours from home). I am just hoping that they can

come up with something to get him through this winter, it has been so rough

on him. Another thing that has me worried is that lately when his wrist

gets swollen he has been getting a big bump on the bottom of his wrist -

does anyone know what that is? Can that mean that his bone is getting

deformed on that part? Sorry I did not mean to write such a long letter.

Its just that lately I have been worrying more about how his meds are going

to affect him in the long run. Anyway nice talking to you and I really hope

everything gets better!!!

Yes, it is my son Skyler who has Systemic JRA. At the moment things are not

going so well. It is allmost 2:20 in the morning and I can not sleep due to the

anxiety of facing a judge at 10:00 am to debate why a state funded medical

program has denied us three times and the burden is on us to convince the judge.

As ironic as it may sound, the last few weeks might have shown cause for the

court and this agency to consider as he is starting to slip again. Skyler has

been on new medications since September (I think) after a trip to UCLA Medical

center in California. We have been on Prednisolone for over a year now and the

Dr's are very frustrated in trying to get him off it before the risk or side

effects become to bad. Initially the treatment appeared to be working, but

these recent weeks he has been showing increasing signs of problems. We got him

down to 6mg but pain in his feet has increased and he is again having trouble

walking and the last several nights the fevers are starting to return. He has

had increasing trouble sleeping and is exhibiting many more side effects of the

drugs. He has the mouth sores and an excemic rash on his chin and both eyelids,

he has developed a chronic cough and I am afraid this is one of those bad MTX

things. The artical I read on MTX sais this needs to be checked out immediately

so we will go to Dr after court. Christmas eve I spent up with him all night

trying to massage his feet and back to ease the pain, but little helped. Santa

had a hard time filling the stockings, didnt get done till sunrise just before

my daughters woke.

We are scheduled to go back to UCLA Jan 23rd so I hope we can find a new

treatment, I just pray they will atleast remove a drug or two. Each time they

add something they have just kept all the rest even though they don't appear to

help.

I'm sorry, I should stop while I am behind. Recently I read someone saying that

" there are those who only come on to make us all cry " and I have stayed away

from writing to avoid being that person.

Please know you and your child will be in my prayers . God Bless

[ & Skyler]

Hello everyone.

My daughter, , 15, has poly. She's been diagnosed since 3 yrs. She is

now on 10 mg Mtx and Daypro. She has been taking prednisone sporadically as

needed.

She has been having flares about once a month for about the last yr. but

misses school about once a week due to fatique, but not pain. Last week she

had about a cup of fluid removed from her knee ( her rt knee has always been

the main affected jt.) She had an injection in it also. The swelling went

away for about 2 days and is now more swollen than ever. We go back to the

doc today for our first enbrel injection. I am not sure what he will do

about the knee today. Maybe repeat the procedure? This happened the first

time that she got the injection. (about 10 years ago) She has had this

injection only 3 times altogether.

Has anyone else had this happen? Where the injection backfired?

What happens now?

Hi ,

The liquid was the swelling and inflamation on her knee. She did have

cortisteroid also. I'm afraid that they may have to use something stronger

than that, and I thought that was the miracle drug? I'm hoping that enbrel

works for her.

Will do Teri.

We are going to file for a 2 week continuance. There is a local Disability

legal support organization that is examining Skylers case. Though they say they

don't think they can help due to the strict and severe guidelines of the

organization, they are taking a close look at the facts and will atleast advise

us. But they are delayed due to the holidays.

Get this, the reasons for this group rejecting Skyler is " He does not meet our

standards for being Chronically ill " .

Thanks for the prayers.

Hi Theresa,

My son had injections this past June in 5 different places (right shoulder,

each wrist and each ankle). It helped for a while (but then it was summer

and summers are pretty good for him). By the time September came he started

with his flares again and has been like that ever since. It didn't make a

big difference. Now I am not sure if this is the same thing they did to

your daughter. I do not recall the doctors saying that they took out liquid

- it might have been a different procedure, because he got shots of

cortisone.(something like that).

Debra,

Congratulations! Having a little one around that you can share and watch grow

is such a special gift. My Mom had cancer of the uterus and had a major

surgery, just at that time my daughter who was only 17 and made me so angry

that she got pregnant to begin with. Produced Devin during a time that he

truly brought so much joy to our whole family. He made Mom feel good inside,

he made her laugh, and gave her love and hope to go on. He is 6 now and my

mother still calls Devin her special child.

Hi Theresa,

I really hope that the Enbrel works for your daughter. My son was on it for

a year but it did not help. Now they are thinking of putting him on

Reumatrex(the IV drug). I am a little skeptical about it. He is so little

and has tried so many things. But I have been told that the enbrel and the

Methotrexate work well together and has worked for many. so hopefully that

will work with your daughter.

This is our family's traditional bbq sauce: A cup of ketchup, a half cup

of brown sugar, and a cup of of bourbon. It makes a great sauce, and the

amounts per ingredient can vary depending on your mood!!!!!!! Hey! We live

in the South! What . can I say!?!?! :>>> P.S. No, Vita, this

did NOT come from Martha .... More like Martha Stanley!!!!

Pumpkin pie and squash? You're a man of many talents,

aren't you. Yes I guess we are expecting " measurable "

snowfall. I'm ready for it. We expect a white

Christmas around here. -dz-
