For us in the United States, it is the celebration of the first harvest for

the settlers who landed at Plymouth. President Lincoln made the current date

a national holiday on October 3, 1863. It was originally celebrated in 1863,

when the Pilgrims and Indians put their harvests together for a celebration.

Hee hee hee!! I sure loved the whole pilgrim & indian lovefest

fantasy our school system shoved down my throat all through my

childhood. Thanksgiving is just another relaxing holiday.....for

TRADITION purposes. You know is all part of the collective happiness

thing every nation " needs " to spread some love. FAmily time.

National pride. Greases us into the Christmas spirit tradition.

Gets us rolling. Gives me an excuse to relax on my diet.....NOT!!

OUtside the holiday PR....

The Pilgrims were dudes reeling off a revolution in England....and

they wanted freedom of religion for themselves in this crazy place

America. The Indians to them were savages until they succumbed to

the teachings of the master race religion of christianity. And the

Indians, a rather violent culture as well, recognized the value of

trading with the white man....they could use the muskets, tools, &

horses to conquer and defeat opposing tribes. The whole " celebration

of the harvest " jive might be true, but the " truth " about the hardy

Euro religious folks & the " friendly Indians " who coexisted here is

an interesting read....unfortunately not found in any school textbook

I've studied. But so is the case with any country.

Wow, October 3rd!! I didn't know that. When did it change?!!

Dear Lyme Friends,

We have much to celebrate, despite this bleeping illness. I'm thankful for all

of you, for a wonderfully supportive husband and partner (), and for much

improvement in my own health over the past year. Now it's ' turn -- we're

working hard on that!

Now that daughter Amy Rose is living in Gettysburg PA, we really don't have any

family in Texas (although my other daughter lives near), and rarely gets

out of the house. Used to drop by a couple of the places where we used to host

Karaoke, and they always had a Thanksgiving spread out. isn't up to it

this year.

We DO have Karaoke tonight, and the owners of the club will have a spread

(Texas-sized feast). will try to make a brief appearance if he still feels

well enough, but won't stay long. Much of our Karaoke family will be there.

I will drop by the house of some friends, where many people will be gathering

this afternoon while rests.

Now that I can drive on freeways again, I'm VERY mobile! I'm VERY thankful for

my license restrictions being lifted on my birthday this past October.

I may stop by my " estranged " daughter's house (about 20 minutes by freeway).

Won't she be surprised? But I want to see my grandson, and it would be nice to

touch base with blood family. Previously, I couldn't get to her house from here

with my driving restrictions, and she hasn't spoken to us since Amy moved to

GBurg -- all Lyme's fault!! But, they don't understand or accept Lyme in the

first place. She pretty much has been uninvolved in our lives since Lyme

diagnosis in 1995.

Tryptophane works great for sleep! Eat LOTS of turkey! You'll sleep like a baby!

Speaking of sleep -- I had my first good night's sleep in a week last night!

From exhaustion and stress, no doubt! Been in a high manic state all week -- a

very productive one, but it keeps the mind racing and interrupts sleep. I've had

3 nights in a row with no sleep, and the night before night terrors kept waking

me up screaming and with my body charged like a light socket! Last night was

wonderful!

And I'm especially thankful that we can gather together like this. God bless you

and yours, family!

HAPPY THANKSGIVING, EVERYONE!!

Love,

Rose and in Texas

p.s. Already talked with my invalid mother in CA (97 years old!), and my sister

who is her care-taker. Talked with daughter Amy Rose in Gettysburg, so it's been

a good day so far! Just have to call or visit Shelli, and then off to other

things! Busy day ahead!

Sorry, I might not have been clear enough on that. Here is what I learned

from Heidi's column today.

A Day of Thanksgiving

In the United States of America, today is Thanksgiving Day ~ a national

holiday whose origins I am ashamed to say I did not learn until this year!

Always assumed it had something to do with Pilgrims and Indians... although

the last Thursday in November seemed a little late in the season for a

harvest festival. Thanks to a friend, I learned that President Lincoln

instituted the holiday's current date (originally celebrated on August 6,

1624 according to the diaries of the first Pilgrim colony's governor,

Bradford). My best wishes for a joyful Thanksgiving to you all!

By the President of the United States of America.

Washington, D.C.

October 3, 1863

A Proclamation.

The year that is drawing towards its close, has been filled with the

blessings of fruitful fields and healthful skies. To these bounties, which

are so constantly enjoyed that we are prone to forget the source from which

they come, others have been added, which are of so extraordinary a nature,

that they cannot fail to penetrate and soften even the heart which is

habitually insensible to the ever watchful providence of Almighty God. In

the midst of a civil war of unequaled magnitude and severity, which has

sometimes seemed to foreign States to invite and to provoke their

aggression, peace has been preserved with all nations, order has been

maintained, the laws have been respected and obeyed, and harmony has

prevailed everywhere except in the theatre of military conflict; while that

theatre has been greatly contracted by the advancing armies and navies of

the Union. Needful diversions of wealth and of strength from the fields of

peaceful industry to the national defence, have not arrested the plough, the

shuttle or the ship; the axe has enlarged the borders of our settlements,

and the mines, as well of iron and coal as of the precious metals, have

yielded even more abundantly than heretofore. Population has steadily

increased, notwithstanding the waste that has been made in the camp, the

siege and the battle-field; and the country, rejoicing in the consiousness

of augmented strength and vigor, is permitted to expect continuance of years

with large increase of freedom. No human counsel hath devised nor hath any

mortal hand worked out these great things. They are the gracious gifts of

the Most High God, who, while dealing with us in anger for our sins, hath

nevertheless remembered mercy. It has seemed to me fit and proper that they

should be solemnly, reverently and gratefully acknowledged as with one heart

and one voice by the whole American People. I do therefore invite my fellow

citizens in every part of the United States, and also those who are at sea

and those who are sojourning in foreign lands, to set apart and observe the

last Thursday of November next, as a day of Thanksgiving and Praise to our

beneficent Father who dwelleth in the Heavens. And I recommend to them that

while offering up the ascriptions justly due to Him for such singular

deliverances and blessings, they do also, with humble penitence for our

national perverseness and disobedience, commend to His tender care all those

who have become widows, orphans, mourners or sufferers in the lamentable

civil strife in which we are unavoidably engaged, and fervently implore the

interposition of the Almighty Hand to heal the wounds of the nation and to

restore it as soon as may be consistent with the Divine purposes to the full

enjoyment of peace, harmony, tranquillity and Union.

In testimony whereof, I have hereunto set my hand and caused the Seal of the

United States to be affixed.

Done at the City of Washington, this Third day of October, in the year of

our Lord one thousand eight hundred and sixty-three, and of the Independence

of the Unites States the Eighty-eighth.

By the President: Abraham Lincoln
