Guest guest
Hi Judy. Are you sure what you are seeing is manic and not just hyper, or even ADHD? I know he is young, so it is different. My daughter has very classic signs of bipolar, but she was 15, when she was diagnosed. She started with only depression and anxiety symptoms at 12 and didn't add the manic symptoms until she was 15. Mine was on Zoloft for a year and a half with only minor, periodic symptoms before the bipolar truly ruled its ugly head. Maybe you might want to try a mood stabilizer and see if that makes a difference for him. I have been told that it is more important to first have the bipolar controlled than work on the OCD/anxiety issues. My dd did a lot of cycling and feels like an " out of control maniac " , her words, when not controlled. She is like a different kid when she is doing well, but is more likely to have her OCD symptoms then. Good luck. I know how hard this is. Kim In a message dated 1/19/2008 2:17:00 P.M. After seeing my son's behaviors, bad reactions to SSRI's, and " bad thoughts' or hallucinations " I would swear he is much more " classic Bipolar " than my daughter. My ds has been diagnosed with OCD " bad thought " type, and the doctor is considering adding the mood disorder nos to it, but reluctant, seeing my ds is only 6. In reference to your question, after thinking about this, my ds has been off meds totally for only a few days, and he never went back to his old self. He is just as manic on the anti-psychotics as on the SSRI's, and the same without anything, and like I said, he was always a calm , quiet little boy until the day he took his first dose of Zoloft. He's never been the same since. I guess it does sound like Bipolar too. I am constantly trying to analyze these kids diagnosis's. Sorry for rambling! It's just they are so different! Guest guest
Hi Judy. I understand. It can be so frustrating. I think my dd is classic. She cycles between severe depressions and mania as soon as her meds need to be changed. Unfortunately, she hasn't gotten to enjoy an extended period of stability yet. I would love to see her be able to function like other teenagers. Maybe your son needs to try a different mood stabilizer. Do they think he was allergic to the first and do they think he would have the same reaction to others? It seems like it would be worth trying to see how he does. I wish it were easier to both diagnose and to treat these kids. I hope you are able to get some answers soon. Kim In a message dated 1/19/2008 6:13:39 P.M. He was only on it for three weeks and we had to discontinue because he got a horrible full body rash.(This was the only time he was similar to before any meds) I swear, it's always something! I have to wonder if my dd is bipolar. Maybe all her raging was due to her OCD and PDD-NOS. Maybe my son is truly Bipolar, and all the doctors have it wrong. Oh I wish there was someway to diagnose with a brain scan or something! Thanks for listening, if you even got this far with all my rambling! Hugs Judy **************Start the year off right. Guest guest
Hi Kim. The doctors call my two youngest kids the " Alphabet Soup Kids " Every doctor I have seen rarely gives them the same diagnosis. It's usually a mix of things. This is why I am so confused. My dd has the depression. She shuts herself in her room for hours and has no interest in anything while she is like this. She also has the 6 hour rages, and the out of the blue outbursts. She has been very very difficult since she was an infant. My ds on the other hand does not have any depression. He never wants to be alone. He talks nonstop, like a racing motor, and is on the go like a motor constantly. His doctor told me at first that he had ADHD with the OCD, now he's caling him " manic " . My ds also gets in people's faces and yells, and has a very short fuse. All of this started with the zoloft.Without meds he has severe panic attacks, but so does my dd. My ds was on trileptal, and he was doing wonderful. Guest guest
Thanks Judy, back at you! We're all in this together and somehow that helps. I find writing/talking it out helps me gain some clarity, and keeps me from imploding sometimes! Often feel there are no answers, just kind of have to ride it out, particularily the teen years.... We do have doctors on board and they can't figure it all out, so I figure that lets me off the hook, although I know that no doctor is going to be as vested in helping our son as we (his parents) are! Hugs back to you!!! Barb > > Hi Barb, > Thanks so much for sharing.! Sometimes I think listening to others in similar situations(although heartwrenching) is theraputic! > I know what you mean about just letting time tell. I think in the long run , that is the only way we are going to know how our kids are going to turn out. > I wish we all could just figure out this puzzle! I know you have been through so much also! > Take care and hugs > Judy > >
