As a person with CML I was told by my doctor that I not only could not donate

organs, but I can no longer donate blood either. Very sad day for me as I had

always checked " yes " for donor.

My doctor told me the same thing. I have it marked on my dr. license.

A very dear friend died and was an organ donor when my kids were in high

school. We all have that marked, but not me anymore!!

Have a great day,

According to Dr Druker, the only body part we can donate are corneas.

No we cannot donate blood or be a organ donor. I never check off anything. I

just renewed my license, and I thought about the fact that I could never help

anyone else. Knowing I have CML, and other issues.

There was just a recent case of someone who donated their organs, and were

healthy at the time. Then they developed HIV. There kidney was given to

someone, and now that person has HIV. I do not know how that persons organs and

blood were not rechecked first.

Its a very delicate issue to consider.

Hi ,

Actually here is how it went. The person was tested and did not have any

disease....but between that time and when the kidney was donated, they had

unprotected sex and were exposed to HIV. First the kidney recipient developed

AIDS and they did not know where it came from.....then they tested the (living)

donor and that person was HIV positive. They have now decided that they need to

retest closer to the time of donation. A living donor is usually a family member

or close friend, but not always.
