Guest guest
can someone please explain to me what exposure therapy is? thanks judy a bit of good news I just wanted to put the word out there....if you live in Ohio, I may have a recommendation for you. My DD (9yrs old)suffers from OCD. We have made major healing progress in the past three months and amazing leaps and bounds in the past 2 weeks. I feel certain that the therapist and the psychatrist I found at Cincinnati Children's are due credit. The therapist specializes in childhood OCD and she is wonderful. She focuses on exposure and response therapy. AND CREDIT TO THIS BOARD AND ALL THE WONDERFUL PEOPLE FOR EDUCATING ME ON SUCH THIS TYPE OF THERAPY!!! If you are in the area and you would like more of my two cents feel free to email me privately or through the board and I would be happy to share my positive experience!!! Thanks, Colette in Dayton, Ohio
Guest guest
Hi, Judy. ERP is exposure and response prevention. It is where your child works on exposing themselves to specific rituals, or thoughts, to desensitize themselves to the response they have to it. Eventually they no longer feel the compulsion to do " it " , or the compulsion becomes so much quieter that they are able to ignore it. The anxiety or uncomfortable feeling that goes along with the rituals also diminishes, or if you are fortunate, goes away. It usually starts by the child making a list of all the rituals they feel they have to do. They establish a hierarchy and start working with the easiest things; then work their way up to the tougher things. Our son has been seeing a psychologist who specializes in the treatment of OCD using ERP and CBT (cognitive behavioral therapy). It's the only time in all the years of therapy that he has shown some improvement. Hope that helps. ) BJ > > can someone please explain to me what exposure therapy is? > thanks > judy > a bit of good news > > > I just wanted to put the word out there....if you live in Ohio, I may > have a recommendation for you. Guest guest
Judy, I just wanted to add a little to what BJ said. ERP actually re- trains the brain how to deal with anxiety. CAT scans actually show changes in the brain after someone with OCD has completed ERP. Our son is just starting ERP. The therapist will actually involve your child in determining which rituals to start with. They come up with a goal and work towards that goal. Once they have met it, they move on to the next one. I live in the St. Louis area, so if you are anywhere near the St Louis area, I can recommend a group that specializes in OCD and ERP.
