Guest guest
Well, you can guess my thoughts, Sinead. Four weeks didn't work so well for my son. In fact, six months haven't helped much, but he is a tough case. I hope this research is true for most people. New study on effectiveness of ERP Hi Everyone, I know this article will interest you all. http://ucsdnews. ucsd.edu/ newsrel/health/ 01-08OCD. asp I know a number of have children who have undergone intensive ERP therapy for OCD and I would be interested in hearing your thoughts on this. From our experience, the 4-week treatment seems extremely short - it may begin to effect changes in the brain but I wonder how effective it would be in the long run. Our son had four months of intensive treatment and his OCD improved enormously, but he does still struggle with it. Guest guest
We have not had first hand experience with this but I have read, on this board and in books, and met at the conference those who had/have results from intensive erp, but slip. From what I understand for many/most it is a life-long challenge to varying degrees. Dependent on life stress and maintainance therapy and personal will. Since it is the nature of ocd to grow if you do what it asks, it seems to me it would not take much to slip, if you figure, " just this time I'll do this ritual to get some relief " . Much like any form of addiction, I would think. From what I understand it's not something that ever goes away, but the volume can be turned down, and it can be managed, so that it does not limit someone from functioning and having a life. Much like any mental illness. Seems to me, readiness, insentive(like seeing the possibility of a life without ocd) and personal will, all play a part. Many people get therapy for many things and don't get better... Just my thoughts. Guest guest
Our experience with ERP was good. Our son was presenting emotophobia (fear of vomiting) at the time, and after undergoing CBT/ERP over a period of two months, the emotophobia was completely eradicated. Note: it did not address any and all obsessive thoughts. However, the obsession and/or phobia being addressed singly was very effective because it then translated over to obsessions in general. The child learns that mastery can be achieved over a specific obsession, and the same tools can be used to conquer other obsessions/phobias. I believe it is effective. > > Hi Everyone, > I know this article will interest you all. > http://ucsdnews.ucsd.edu/newsrel/health/01-08OCD.asp > > I know a number of have children who have undergone intensive ERP therapy for OCD and I would be interested in hearing your thoughts on this. Guest guest
My son did an intensive CBT/ERP therapy at the U of Florida in Gainesville. He was a changed man when he returned. Suddenly, he could access his brain again. He was playful and funny again. He attended day camp all summer and did well, making friends, etc. But as return to school time approached, he got anxious again. So we went back for a week long tune up. He did well for a few weeks, then started to refuse school. We have had a hard time getting him back on track, and he is currently not attending school at all. Even when I try to teach him at home, he is unable to focus. We are in a bad place again. I hope that the new therapist we have signed on with will get him back on track. But it has certainly been our experience that four weeks is NOT enough. I do recall reading that that studies showed that the gains at four weeks hold as well as the gains made over a slower course of therapy. I believe my son needs ongoing CBT/ERP, because his OCD morphs and there are always new obsessions and compulsions. It seems to me that others are finding the same thing with their kids. Hopefully the research will catch up to us so we can get more therapy paid for. mm > > > > Hi Everyone, > > I know this article will interest you all. > > http://ucsdnews.ucsd.edu/newsrel/health/01-08OCD.asp > > > > I know a number of have children who have undergone intensive ERP > therapy for OCD and I would be interested in hearing your thoughts on > this. Guest guest
Hi, . I remember when I was reading about ERP it said it wouldn't work for some people, (can't remember the percentage). I wonder if it is that, or maybe your son's age. I don't think Josh would have responded as well at a younger age. Although I've read that ERP works well on younger kids, I know it wouldn't have with Josh. At 15, he seemed ready to get serious about it. I hope, for Noah's sake (and yours), that it is just a matter of age and maturity, like it was for Josh. Hugs, BJ > > Well, you can guess my thoughts, Sinead.
