Thanks for making me not feel stupid. I am so new to this and overwhelmed. was dx with tort and plagio almost a month ago and we are currently focusing on the tort first and foremost. We had the final paperwork for today and will be starting PT this week. Thanks for clarifying what the difference was for me.

Re: Re: Reactions to bands

Taryn,That's not a stupid question, that's actually a great question!! I hope someone will correct me here, but I always thought a band had an opening on the top, and a helmet was fully enclosed. But, that's not to say I haven't called ' DOC band a helmet before, because I certainly have interchanged both words, just as a habit I guess. I hope someone can elaborate better for you!For more plagio info

Taryn,

Ok, scratch that last email asking you to share your story with me!! That is really great that is starting pt this week. Make sure you learn as much as you can from the pt so that you can incorporate doing daily stretches as well. You will be 's biggest pt- so your job will be tough as you need to stretch out that muscle, make sure the posture is correct (midline) with props, etc. You are doing a great job already by concentrating on the tort- chances are, the tort is either causing the plagio, or making any existing plagio worse with constant favoring of the non-tort side. You have to address the tort first because a helmet/band will only be as good for as long as she wears it if the tort is allowed to continue. Also be aware that sometimes with tort they tend to pull up on that side with their hip, shoulder, even rib cage. did the shoulder and rib cage was shifting already by two months, but with pt and massage to pull those extremeties back downwards, he resolved those issues with flying colors. If has left tort, reposition her on the left side as she is probably favoring the right, and vice versa. If she has limited ROM to the left, turn her head towards the left when sleeping, etc. as much as possible. We had the greatest luck with stretches when was fast asleep, but always take stretches slowly. I will attach a link with some great exercises and a carrying hold. Also, if you haven't already, check into www.torticolliskids for some great advice and support from more tort parents. If I can help you with tips, advice, support as well, please know you have my ear too! Good luck and keep us posted on how is doing!

Stretches/ Hold

Baby Massage

(for the baby massage, try to use that in a way that will help give the neck muscle some stimulation, in a downward motion- very lightly- but if any facial asymmetry is present, we found massage upwards also beneficial for the facial features as the muscle pulls down the facial and ear features, and will pull up the upper torso (shoulder, rib cage). Hope this helps a little!! I know your at the beginning of your journey, hang in there, your hard work and worry will pay off in no time!

' Mom (dx with severe tort at 2mnths, pt 2x week from 3-9/10 months (also daily stretches/massage with Mom or Dad), DOC band from 5-8 months- whew!)
