Preventing Osteoarthritis

Stop the pain pills and find natural solutions to ease

arthritis.

There are many different forms of arthritis, but the

most common are rheumatoid arthritis and

osteoarthritis. By far, the most common type of

arthritis is osteoarthritis. In fact, after the age of 50,

approximately 80 percent of Americans will be

affected with osteoarthritis. Osteoarthritis is simply

that wear and tear degeneration of the cartilage.

Osteoarthritis usually affects the main weight-bearing

joints, such as the hips and knees, and, also, it can

affect the back. This condition has reached epidemic

proportions in the U.S.

But there are ways to prevent osteoarthritis. One

simple way you can do it is, first of all, lose some

weight. The less weight on the joint, the better the

joint will become. If you put 300 pounds on a joint

that's only supposed to carry 120 pounds, you're going

to eventually wear that joint out. Also, if you do

repetitive motions for long periods of time, you'll

eventually wear the joints out.

The joint is actually made up of cartilage. Cartilage

is a smooth, glistening material, like what we see at

the end of a chicken bone. Everyone has peeled a

chicken bone off, and they've seen that smooth,

glistening cartilage that's actually eight times slicker

than ice.

In order to hydrate that cartilage, you've got to have

water. Cartilage is made up of about 80 percent

water, so we have to have adequate water. You

need three quarts of water a day to keep it hydrated,

because cartilage doesn't have blood vessels; it

depends on the synovial fluid and adequate water

intake to keep it nourished.

Ed used to have an old mitt that he left outside. He left it

out there for a month and forgot about it. When he

finally saw it, instead of the leather being nice and

smooth, it was all cracked from being left outside.

That's the same thing that happens to your cartilage

when it doesn't have enough water year after year.

To nourish that cartilage, you also need supplements.

The most important supplement by far is Glucosamine

sulfate. Glucosamine sulfate nourishes the

proteoglycans that make up the cartilage matrix,

and you want to nourish that cartilage to keep it

strong.

Arava is similar to Methotrexate in function and in side effects for many people

but there are differences for some individuals. It stays in the body for a

longer time than Methotrexate so if you have severe side effects it is necessary

to take special medicines to counteract it. However, few people get side

effects this bad. One person I know had trouble with the recommended dose of 20

mg daily but does well on 10 mg. A group called something like Public Citizen

petitioned the American Food and Drug Administration to remove the drug from the

market because of side effects but after a special all-day hearing on the pros

and cons the FDA decided that the benefits outweighed the disadvantages. As

with Methotrexate, it it important to get frequent blood work (usually monthly

for a few months and then every other month). It is also like Methotexate in

that it usually takes several weeks to months to notice an effect and many

people think it is doing no good until they stop!

and feel a lot worse.

I hope this answered your questions, but if not post again and I'll try again.

God bless.

Hi Bobbie,

Grandpavan gave you some good basic information on Arava in his

post. Most of the documented side effects are GI types of things -

diarrhea being a big one, along with stomach upset and sometimes

loss of appetite. Personally I've had mixed experiences with it -

at 20 mg I had a lot of problems and so stopped it after 4 months.

I'm now back on at 10 mg and haven't had any side effects. However,

I've only been on it a month and haven't seen any real benefits

either.

It's a lot cheaper than the biologic agents like Enbrel, Humira and

Kineret. The price that shows from my pharmacy is $410 per month,

compared with the $1084 for my Kineret (fortunately I have good

health insurance that picks up most of the cost). Also, it's a pill

rather than an injection.

If you need more information, a good website to check out

information on various drugs (including interactions between drugs)

is www.drugdigest.org.
