Guest guest
Dianne, I am doing bfl without supplements--you are not alone. I do have Myoplex Lite bars and shakes. Toffee Crunch--too good to be an authorised food--have to keep checking the label to reassure myself. In doing lots of reading, I have found a lot of the bfl champs " tweaked " the program. I know others who have had great results and just use BFL as a guideline but did not stick to it religiously. My sis followed the basic idea--6 small meals with high protein but did not watch cal, carb, fat and did not take supplements. She did do the excercise according to the book. She lost 20 lbs., and a couple clothing sizes in the 12 weeks and looked great! All that said, (and I know there are some who would disagree with me), I follow the book as closely as possible but because this program is for life and not another yoyo diet, you have to be sensible. Some questions i had to ask--Can I afford supplements? Do I want to live my life always checking into how many supps I have to have today? Are these supps really safe and do they really do what they promise? (There are many differing opinions on this subject alone.) I'd rather save my money, eat wise and healthy, excercise properly, and then let my body take care of itself. Thsi is more sensible for me personally. My goal is not to have giant muscles, just be strong, healthy, and lose some excess baggage. Hope I didn't ramble too much. Take care, Donna H.--doing it w/o supps. Guest guest
Dianne, I've been doing the program for almost a year and I don't take any supplements. Why? Because the program is working so well without it... I see no need. And I'm just not personally crazy about filling my body with chemicals over the long-term... and I am in it for the long-term. I do use protein powders and eat protein bars, but I try to get as much of my nutritional requirements from whole foods as possible. That's something I can feel comfortable in continuing to do for many years to come. Everyone is entitled to their own opinion and approach, but to the people who say they " need " supplements to lose fat, etc... I ask - do you ever cheat on your diet? Do you ever miss a workout? I honestly believe if you stick to the nutritional program and hit your " 10 " 's on your exercises, then supplementation is completely unnecessary. As I've said before... everyone wants the " body in a bottle " pill -- but it just doesn't work that way. Guest guest
Dianne, Keep in mind when reading Porter's routine that he was one of the 1997 champions, before the BFL book, so they only had general guidelines that they recommended way back then. Bill wrote the BFL book after gathering information from hundreds of people and his own experience, and developed the BFL program based on what was most successful and was also a " do-able " program for the average person. I actually entered that 1997 contest, and sort of lost my focus about 4 weeks into it. The sticking factor for me this time (when I started BFL last summer) was the Crossing the Abyss and Focusing Your Future Vision sections of the book. Those were the elements that were missing for me before. Lots of people have great success on this program by just following it exactly as outlined in the BFL book, no tweaks, and no fancy supplements. Keep it simple, keep training hard, and you will be successful like so many others are. Guest guest
Ok, I will add my nickels worth here... not sure how much it will help, but here goes. When I had started BFL last summer I religiously took the Myoplex shakes...but holy noodles it was expensive 3 x a day...so then I slacked off and went to protein bars..well...they really didn't cut it for me not enough protein, which I feel that I need to keep me full longer and more alert. I find the majority of bars too sweet for me (and dontcha know this baby has one heck of a sweet tooth). Anyway, I now am going to 2 shakes a day, and I have a homemade shake I I like to make usually for breakfast, fast, easy, tasty: soymilk, (bout 6 oz) one banana one raw egg...(ducking as I say, this, I know raw eggs carry a danger of salmonella...but I can't help it...makes the shake thicker and more tasty) oh and sometimes I even add some raw eggwhites to the mixture (ducking again) Whip it all up in a blender or hand mixer and guzzle it back. Doesn't have to be a banana, can be any fruit in season, but banana seems to have the nicest flavour. Those of you who like yogourt could easily throw a scoop in there. Peeks head back up again...safe, I think ? And I openly admit to being new and not necessarily aware of carb counts, etc. so if you have anything to add/suggest, I'm all ears. Guest guest
Jon, I am curious, because although I do take Myoplex, I want to make changes for a lifetime, not just 12 weeks, and I don't like the idea of needing these aids for a lifetime. Is it ok to ask what kind of results you achieved without supplementation, and of course, are you happy/proud of where you're at? I have lots more questions, but those'll do for a start. >From: pax_65@... >Reply-bodyforlife >bodyforlife >Subject: Re: kind of disappointed >Date: Wed, 28 Mar 2001 19:59:00 -0000 > > >Dianne, > >I've been doing the program for almost a year and I don't take any >supplements. > >Why? Guest guest
That's my morning shake. I have 8 oz of natural soymilk (6g P, 6gC, 3F), then I add my one scoop of protein powder, L-Glutamine, Flax Oil (or Udo's), and a medium sized banana. It works out pretty even for me, and tastes good too! My evening one I swap the banana for strawberries .. yum! Anyway, I now am going to 2 shakes a day, and I have a homemade shake I I like to make usually for breakfast, fast, easy, tasty:soymilk, (bout 6 oz)one bananaone raw egg...(ducking as I say, this, I know raw eggs carry a danger of salmonella...but I can't help it...makes the shake thicker and more tasty)oh and sometimes I even add some raw eggwhites to the mixture (ducking again)Whip it all up in a blender or hand mixer and guzzle it back. Guest guest
I am doing BFL without suppliments. I only use the bars and the shakes as meal replacements. I think it has to be better then how I was eating and exercizing before I started BFL. So maybe I wont lose weight or build muscle as fast as others who are using suppliments. IT is okay because I am in this for the long haul anyway right? - AMY > I went to Porter Freeman's site and read through his > diet/exercise regime and it's quite different from BFL other than > frequency of meals. Scientists have been doing studies on eggs and they have been finding the salmonella isn't coming from INSIDE the egg, it's coming from the OUTSIDE. The shell! Guest guest
Myoplex is not necessary. It is simply a meal replacement that is sometimes more convenient than whole foods. I don't think it contains any miracles that you cannot get from regular food. Guest guest
And why use them when you can get more complete protiens from a food source, I only use the protien powder sparringly, and it saves you a ton of money. I just changed I went through three challenges using the shakes they were convenient but you can get by without them and still make 5-6 meals a day, the only thing I use these days is a scoop or 2 of protien powder every other day. the guy I buy supplements from hates it <hehe>. so to answer your question, use a whole food instead of the shake, more power to you hope this helps bill .. > > > > I went to Porter Freeman's site and read through his > > > > diet/exercise regime and it's quite different from BFL other > than > > > > frequency of meals.
