Guest guest
Debbie - The only time it really is a problem is if you go with dark wood - the finish is usually ultra shiny and shows scratches really easily, because the natural wood is much different in shade than the finish, and when you scratch it, that's what you are seeing - the diff between the wood & the finish. But you said you wanted a lighter finish - these usally don't show wear & tear very easily. Our table is like a light spice color, with poly-eurothane type semi gloss finish, let me tell you - we have put that thing through hell and back and you would never know it - it looks great! Congrats on the new house! Enjoy! & Vivian tort/plagio --- dj2kirby@... wrote: > Sorry to go so off topic here, but I need advice in > buying a new dining room set. Guest guest
Debbie, I've had my oak dining table for 10 years and it looks great. It has been my changing table since Sam and Sara were born, and it's great for that too. I'm ready to have my dining room back and quit eating in the kitchen, so the diapers are gradually moving back upstairs. My mom was worried about her wood table and how my brothers and I would abuse it, so she bought the pad that fits it and always keeps a table cloth on it. You can get pretty cute with tablecloths by changing them for the season or occasion, and if you just buy the cheap ones at Target, you can launder them, and change them as often as you want. I've also used the vinyl tablecloths when I've been worried about spills, and we've had no problems in 10 years. Gail OT - Dining room tables Sorry to go so off topic here, but I need advice in buying a new dining room set. We finally sold our house & will be moving into our new home the weekend of 9/19/02 - YAY. Anyhoo, my father in law gratefully offered to buy us a new dining room set (our house now barely had room for a dinky table in it!).My own Dad strongly recommend we only buy a table with a formica top - I had never heard of this, but the formica finish protects against water rings, stains, etc much better than real wood does.I have searched all weekend and found only 3 formica finish tables anywhere, 2 of which were very ugly & fake looking + all in darker finish, I need lighter finish. I finally found a perfect formica table & 6 chair set at a store Sat.,but they were swamped & I could get now service. So I of course go there today to buy it & the darn thing sold one hr before I showed up....GRRRR! This was the last one, they cannot get any more as the manufacturer went bankrupt I am so upset - it was a beautiful table & very inexpensive as it was clearanced :( :( No since crying over spilled milk, but......I've found several other real wood tables I like, but want to know if it's bad to buy real wood vs. formica with a kid. Guest guest
Hey Debbie our dining room table has wood and we haven't really had a problem with it. It has a finish on it that helps prevent water stains and such and this was an antique so I think you can do it as long as it has a good finish on it. Our kitchen table is glass and you may want to consider that- I keep a table cloth on it during the week with but I take it off on the weekends and with company and I love it but you have to clean it a lot. Might want to consider that though-some beautiful glass tables out there and Abby is of a good age-to not be so paranoid about the glass breaking. hhhmmm beck Ps have you tried looking at NC furniture-they have great prices and you can order over the Internet and get shipping included a lot of the times-let me know I have links if you re interested. Guest guest
Thanks to everyone who replied to my post!!! I went back to the store that sold the perfect table I wanted SO badly & actually cried about it ----- how pathetic is that?? I was so emotional yesterday, I bawled like a baby when they announced the winner of American Idol, then cried my eyes out at a depressing commercial for the Bible with an old lady eating dinner all alone.....PMS or something!? Anyhoo, we finally bought a table, not a formica top, I found most of those to be too fake looking & too expensive for something I didn't even like the looks of. We went back to the 1st store we went to & bought the 1st table we looked at - it was 's favorite (it had drawers on the ends to store his magazines, whatever!). I like it real well too, but of course still wish I had bought the other one. Thanks again everyone! I really appreciate your help. Guest guest
I'm glad you found a table - I'm sure it will suit you well. Talk about crying like a baby! I felt so dumb - they are like the winner is...... and I feel like I'm going to vomit..... son! And I'm like - totally crying. I felt like the biggest dork - I was trying not to let my husband see me. She's just so cute and humble, although Tamyra really should have won! Cried at the commericial too! & Vivian tort/plagio --- debbieandabby <dj2kirby@...> wrote: > Thanks to everyone who replied to my post!!! That's ok, I don't blame you there! I revoke my " rock " status from myself for that! I didn't even watch the show for the most part, and quite frankly, it was SO cheesy, it was comical at times to watch. wouldn't let me watch it, he despised it so much, but he was out last night so I could watch it! After that I watched the US Open tennis match with my boy Agassi.....now he rocks! LOL Debbie
