What a great ped!!! I wish my ped would have acted more like that- not that

she was against banding, but just seemed to downplay plagio too much and

probably would not have advised me to band unless I had asked for that rx.

You are to be commended for taking matters into your own hands and getting

Vivian the help she needs! Good for you- and its nice that a Doctor took

time to give you a much deserved pat on the back! Keep us posted on how

Vivian's doing!

What a wonderful doc!!!! You give him a big hug and kiss for all of us and our children!!! More doctors should be proactive with it comes to plagio and tort and maybe if they spoke out and brought it up at conferences or whenever they get together with other peds or possibly even wrote letters to the AAP themselves something more would be done for our little angels. That is wonderful that you are getting things done for Vivian and found such a great doc. I am sad to say the parents probably refused helmets because one they don't know anything about them and two are afraid of what other people will say....that they will be made fun of and have people look at the parents wrong. Some people are just all for appearances, you know? I don't care about any of that and none of us on this list do either because it is something our children need to grow and develop and who cares what that entails, you know?

Pediatrician commends "nutty" moms! - sorry long!

Just wanted to let you all know -I asked Vivian's new ped directly for an RX for the band - I didn't take her in- I just called and was like look - "I don't want to bring her in - you've seen her head" "we have talked about this before". We knew she had plagio and not cranio, and I didn't want to have to go to another specialist to get a referall and waste more time blah blah blah - so he did and she was "scanned/casted" last week. (our old ped was the wait and see type -didn't do anything)Anyway, my hubby takes her in to the ped yesterday to check her ears (we thought she might have an infection) and he took with him a copy of her head scan printout from the helmet appt. The ped says "I am so glad your wife is proactive about these things", "More mothers need to take action with plagiocephaly", "She should be commended". !!!!!!!!He said that he has brought it up to more than one parent that their baby should be referred for a helmet - and they have said no! He also said that the ped community is just not aggressive enough with this. As a matter of fact, he said that the day before he saw a new patient who was 13 months old. He said that when she walked in the door, he could see the asymmetry immediately. It was really bad. He asked her if her old ped had ever discussed helmet therapy with her. She was like "What?" - she had never heard of it. He told her to look at the baby's head from the top. She did right there, and burst out in tears. How sad! I almost cried. This just more than ever affirms how glad I am that I am doing the right thing for Vivian, so I won't have to be this woman, and how great it is that you all are here to support and encourage us as we make this decision. I am also glad there are at least some ped's who won't call us "nutty" for doing so!You all should be commended! & VivianFor more plagio info

Taryn,

I know this played a factor in our friends choosing not to go with the helmet. Once we did, I think they started having serious regret. But, I'm glad to say that his severe brachy has rounded slightly, not much, but there is a small area near the top that rounded out a little so now it looks sloped. I feel the same, I could careless what other people think- my kid is my concern!

Exactly my sentiments!!!! I am glad to hear that his brachy is getting better but can you imagine how much better it would have gotten and more quickly had they gotten the helmet therapy?

Taryn,

Yeah, I know. But in their defense, they listened to that Doctor that said

it would round out- I know that there are lots of parents getting that same

advice, and unfortunately, sometimes parents just don't question Doctors and

their opinions enough. Hopefully the correct information will funnel down

where the Doctors are not steering parents in the wrong direction, having to

go above and beyond them to get answers and prevention tips that they are

being paid to give!

I wasn't trying to put anyone down...I was just urging people to get it checked out further if they think something is wrong and they aren't being listened to. This is 's third ped we are on, and thankfully she agrees with me, in her six months of life. I think we are all doing a wonderful job and hopefully with our knowledge we can educate others.

Taryn,

I know you weren't trying to put anyone down, I hope I didn't come across as

sounding like you were! Just thinking how lucky we all are to have access to

the internet and parents that can help us understand what Doctors are not

telling us- I don't know that I would have been so insistent if I hadn't

gotten great advice here, my Doctor was also of the " round out theory " to a

degree and would have probably convinced me too wait it out longer than I was

willing to by 4 months. Keep up the great work in educating everyone you

know!!!

No, you didn't come across as putting me down and I am sorry it came out that way. We are VERY lucky to have access to this wealth of information and all the wonderful people who belong to this list. If every parent was as insistent as we are maybe this problem wouldn't be such an epidemic and not being taken care of. I know as soon as was dx I was online and getting every ounce of info I could on both her tort and plagio. What parent wouldn't want to do that?
