Guest guest
Hi Lois: I have been on Humira for about 15 months now. I had switched from Enbrel because my doc didn't think it was helping as much as it should. I'd have to say that it has been pretty effective for me the entire time I've been on it. I had to go off of it for a bit because of insurance problems and my RA came roaring back with a vengence during that time. So I know it works for me. But it's not a complete cure-all. I still have symptoms, albeit much reduced ones. I still am on Prednisone (5mg) and methotrexate (20mg). Still trying to find that magic combination that will allow me to really be "normal" and without any symptoms. I'm not sure that's realistic, but I keep hoping that someday I'll be able to walk without pain. I know some people have found that the longer they stay on a certain drug, the less effective it becomes for them. I haven't found that to be the case for me, yet. Good luck to you. gloria

Guest guest
Louis, I have been on Humira for 7 months, and a few months taking weekly injections. I noticed a few weeks starting the Humira I was feeling real well, and then nothing. My rheumy started me on weekly, but no change, so I'm back on bi-weekly injections once again. Are you taking the methotrexate with the humira? I have heard taking those combo, makes the humira work a lot better. I can't take the MTX because my liver enzymes go up. Just remember the Humira helps stop the progression of this disease, so that is very important. > Hi all, > > I've been on Humira since the middle of January. Guest guest
Hi Lois, I'm on my 3rd biologic so far (Humira is actually the one that I haven't tried), with varying successes. Enbrel worked for me for 2 years, then Remicade took a long time to kick in and a short time to stop working. I'm now on Kineret, and it's helping, but along with Arava and the dreaded prednisone. The challenge is that we all respond differently to different meds. Some folks are essentially back to normal with the biologics, while for others of us they just help. Even with the help they give, it's still possible to have flares, which may be what you're experiencing now. Don't give up hope, but if the pain persists be sure to call your doctor. Guest guest
Lois, I don't think it is typical of Humira that you experience pain after being on it 6 months with a good response. Nor do I think that the drug is not working for you anymore. It is possible that you are having a "flare". This sometimes happens while on medication. If you doctor hasn't told you how to handle a "flare" I suggest you call him. I was on Humira for about 6 months. My rheumy started with me injecting it every 2 weeks. Since the response was not that good he had me inject weekly. After 6 months of only minimal response I was switched to Remicade. So far it is working better than Humira. I am in no way saying that Humira doesn't work. It just didn't work that well for me. As we have said so many times on this list --- not all drugs work for everybody. Guest guest
Kineret is the least fun of the biologics - it's a daily injection, and it really hurts as the medicine goes in. However, the benefits outweigh the inconvenience and daily pain. I've forgotten to take it a couple of times and have noticed the difference. Kineret works against a different process in the body then the others - it works with the IL-1 (whatever that is) compared to the TNF (tumor necrosis factor) that Enbrel, Humira and Remicade work on.
