Guest guest
Before you make that kind of investment I think you should ask your doctor, and perhaps even get a referral to a physical therapist and get their opinion. Your specific problems might make quite a difference in what kind of exercise is best for you so the decision should be made by someone who knows your situation. God bless. ----- Original Message ----- From: Lynne Rheumatoid Arthritis Sent: Thursday, July 08, 2004 4:10 PM Subject: Re: Need some advice Hi, I have been considering getting an excercise bike, do you think this would be ok for me to use ? Guest guest
It seems the best ones are the ones where you can lean back a little. But whatever you do, get a good comfy seat! Guest guest
Hi Marcia, My doc suggested a recumbent bike, he siad it was better for people with back, hip, knee problems, so I a looking for one of those. At least I will be able to exercise when the weather is too bad to go out now ...lol Lynne
Guest guest
thanks, Lynne. I suppose that a recumbent bike would be more comfortable. but mine is a hand-me-down....it was my dad's.....I don't have the heart to part with it......gentle hugs! marcia > Hi Marcia, > My doc suggested a recumbent bike, he siad it was better for people with back, hip, knee problems, so I a looking for one of those. Guest guest
I also use a recumbent bike for all of my cardio. I find it takes the pressure off the butt and since my RA resides primarily in my feet and ankles, it seems like the angle used to pedal on a recumbent bike isn't as painful as a regular one. Plus, it just feels more comfortable! gloria
Guest guest
oh, thanks Gloria, my ankles are painful too and I have been wondering if a recumbent would be better, it's good to hear from someone who has one. hugs,Lynne
Guest guest
I bought a recumbent bike last christmas. It is GREAT! on my other I could not do 5 minutes because it hurt my knees. I am able to a lot more than that, even if I quit for a while and start up again. I recommend the one at Kmart. It's about $90 and it has 8 difficulty levels and many positions to change for height... my hubby 6'1 and myself 5'0 can both ride it. It also has a back and a full seat!! -----Original Message-----From: Lynne [mailto:Lynne@...]Sent: Sunday, July 11, 2004 6:15 AMRheumatoid Arthritis Subject: Re: Need some advice Hi Marcia, My doc suggested a recumbent bike, he siad it was better for people with back, hip, knee problems, so I a looking for one of those. Guest guest
I ‘m sorry you are having so much trouble. With the drug study now ended you should be entitled to find out what you were receiving during the study. Also you should seek a second opinion from the insurance company and include a note from your doctor telling that you have tried Methotrexate and the reason for stopping it. Don’t give up the first time you are turned down if you have a good reason for thinking the insurance company is wrong. If you can show that Methotrexate has failed you I don’t think the insurance company can ignore that. For the near-term you might use Prednisone. That is a strong anti-inflammatory that is not a good RA medication but is usually very effective in quick relief of symptoms. It has some bad side effects so you want to get off it as soon as possible but most of us are willing to take it if we need it to function. I haven’t tried them myself but I have read that the tetracycline family of antibiotics (specifically Doxycycline and Minocycline) have been shown by clinical trials to be equal to or better than Methotrexate for relieving RA symptoms. These are relatively cheap medications, sometimes less than $1 a day, but they often take quite a while to become effective. This treatment is not popular with many rheumatologists so you may have to look around to find someone to prescribe them. I can send you more information if you are interested. Also don’t give up completely on Methotrexate yet. People often have some trouble with liver enzymes and when they settle down they go back to Methotrexate at a lower dose and have no more problems. Your doctor will help you understand what is good for you. I’m doing well now with a combination of Methotrexate and Remicade but if that fails me I would probably next go to an antibiotic. I hope you find something to give you relief. God bless. I need some advice on Meds. I have severe aggressive RA....and went into a drug study for 2 years. The drug study has now ended....I actually came off of it 6 weeks early due to liver problems with MTX......my liver still isn't back on track yet.....so no more MTX for me. Now my problem is...since I was in the drug study....Double Blind......no meds were run thru my Insurance Company. Doc wrote a script for Enbrel.....Ins co won't pay for it until OTHER meds are tried first. And since we don't know if the study drugs were real or placebo's......and none were run thru the ins....they don't consider that as trying other meds first. Can't say that I blame them....cause once I found out what our part was if the ins co did cover enbrel.....I almost choked. So in trying to find other options .......what are some Meds out there.....that any of you have tried that helped? I can research them ...I just don't know where to start on Names of the meds. Also can't take anything that may compromise my liver more. So for 8 weeks now......I've had No RA meds....and I can sure tell it......my left wrist and hand have gotten so bad that I can't pick up my 2lb poodle My feet both have Nodules now and both elbows..my feet and ankles feel like they've been crushed. .......I did find out I had spurs on my spine......I told Doc I had one place that if I moved a certain way...I felt like I was being branded like a cow.. Guest guest
As with all Ins. Co. you have the right to appeal. Your doctor needs to write a letter stating what meds you have previously tried and that you went into this drug study ain an effort to get a medicine that would help you. Then the Ins. will be more inclined to pay. Also, do you know that the Pharmacy Ins. is not paid/controlled by your Medical provider? You will need to contact your medical ins to get the proper phone numbers. The Pharmacy part will not speak to you but will talk to your Dr's office. There are special forms that need to be filled out. Have the Ins./referral person in the Dr's office call and get the forms. The nurses fill them out and they are usually faxed back. The appeal should take less than 30 days. I use to do this for patient's at a Dr's office I worked at. I usually got about 75% of them approved. Good Luck and you can appeal the appeal Stacey janis ovens <janniewan2002@...> wrote: hi pal, sorry to hear your doing so bad just now, i know what your talking about with the nodules i have afew of them there ugly bloody things but sorry i cant help you on your looking for new or diff meds, im also on MTA and its working for me do far but i still get the odd sore days but nothing like b4. take care pal luv janis xFrogge <lilypadluxuriesgmail> wrote: Hi Everyone....hope your all having a Great Day today.
