Guest guest
Hey Taryn welcome to the club:-) I know I had secretly hoped they said 's head was perfect and this was much to do about nothing- but no such luck:-( so even though you know it is coming it is still a bummer to hear! Health care workers can be quite insensitive- I know because I was one for a zillion years before being mommy. That is certainly a risk but not likely its like saying yeah we can dilate youreyes for this vision test but there is a chance you might go blind-okay well thanks for that info. did not have an MRI or CT but many moms can chime in here-what I remember they got to hold their babies until they fell asleep did the MRI and within the hour the babies were awake again. it is short acting sedation from what I understand but hopefully someone else can give you better info than me. I am sure it was a bummer of a day for you and you have quite the journey ahead of you. I am glad you have thorough neuro that is great. Give that head lots of snuggles and kisses and you go have yourself a nice big margarita! hugs to you! beck
Guest guest
Taryn well I am glad it is oral no one likes to be stuck with needles especially not our little angels. I am sure the procedure will go well for both of you. I know what you mean by -- your not going crazy or overreacting and now you have a professional that agrees-although you are the only one that matters because you are mommy and you know best. I put 's dates on my calendar and will be sure to send extra good vibes to you on those days. Thing will be all right I am sure. Post some pictures soon! Have a good night and no more tears but who am I to talk I cried for 2 weeks after we were told would need his band. Love beck
Guest guest
Thanks so much, Beck. I am so glad someone is on right now reading my post because I wasn't doing so well awhile back. I think I had convinced myself that needed the helmet so was kind of relieved when they said my suspicions were right..I know I must sound twisted!!! I was just tired of people telling me I was overreacting and it would fix itself and yadda, yadda, yadda. You guys know the routine. Thanks for the info on the MRI. She will be getting the oral sedative which they said is much less dangerous than IV sedation. I will give her head lots of snuggles and kisses before it's covered and I had a Malibu and pineapple juice earlier at Applebee's!!!! Guest guest
I am glad it's oral too. They said there are very little side effects and risks with it. They also told me she can't eat anything from 6 a.m. until her MRI (11 a.m.). will not be happy. She usually sleeps until 9:30 and wants her food when she gets up because her last meal is usually at 9 p.m. or so. I figure we will wake her around 5 to give her a bottle so she won't be starving. My mom said I had to have the oral sedative when I was a child and had no reaction so that makes me feel a bit better. Thanks so much for caring and you guys are the best. The first thing I told as we were driving home was "I need to get home to get online to talk to someone on the list". I think about you guys all the time. You know I think I would have been okay about the whole thing because I educated myself about it and knew what to expect and knew in my heart she needed it but that comment put me over the edge. Guest guest
We had to have a CT done for because they were concerned that he may have had Craniocynostosis. (He does not) They had told us that they would give him an oral sedative that would help him to sleep through the whole procedure. I was relieved because I was concerned about him being completely medicated. I think my wife and I may have to worry about him when he is in college, because he was like a drunk little sailor. (He had so much fun) All it did was make him loopy. It was actually quite funny, because he was just silly. Unfortunately it did not make him tired. We ended up having to hold him down for the CT, but the whole process was done quickly and it was a relief to finally know what we would need to do. He ended up being diagnosed at Children's Memorial in Chicago. The whole process is very unnerving, but once it is done, you will feel much better. Good Luck and keep us posted as to the progress. Guest guest
Taryn, I feel like I am reliving my experience through you right now! I had to have get an MRI done when he was only 2 mnths old, I was scared to death about sedation! They had him drink a liquid that put him out within a minute, but the hardest part was getting the IV put in- they had a hard time getting the vein and poked him about 6 times. I finally had enough and a new nurse got the job done- in hindsight I wish I would have been more " no way " about letting them try so much. They wrapped him in a bundle so that he wouldn't move- the sedation only puts them under, not out- they are still conscious, as I was told, and only heavily sleepy. The MRI lasted about 45 minutes, I was inside the area, watching, and listening to the loud noises of the machine. He woke up about 45 min. after the sedation, and the nurses scared me too because they kept saying, " is he awake yet? " - but all was fine and they had him drink liquids before we left. Then we had a second MRI done when he was 6 months old. This time, I knew where the vein was and told them, its going there and only there, and they were very accomodating (and actually more gentle at the regular hospital than at the Children's Hospital!). Again, he was wrapped a little to keep him from moving, and once again the same procedure (btw, it was very cold both times). He woke up quicker the second time around. I believe we had to stop any liquids 3 hours before, and all foods even more before that, and they do that just for precaution to any adverse reaction of vomiting to the medicine. Of course you have to take off all metal and I think only real gold was ok to stay on- they gave me a locker for my purse, keys, etc. I can clearly understand your fear of sedation, but its only a mother's job to be concerned, it was all very uneventful and will do just fine. That nurse was very wrong in telling you in that insensitive way, there is a better way to say that yes, there are risks, but this is a very standard procedure and the risks are very, very minimal- something you might hear when getting your child vaccinated. Good luck to you Taryn, and don't worry. Keep us posted! ' Mom

They did put an IV in just for safety purposes, so that in case of any emergency, and IV was already set.
Guest guest
We didn't have a CT scan or MRI either. We just did skull (to rule out crani) and neck x-rays (for the tort). No sedation involved in that. Maybe that's something they can do instead.
