I *almost* made it to my two day goal of being only positive, but then lost it

yesterday on the way home from school when she told me she had asked her teacher

if she could come home yesterday because her stomach hurt because she was really

hungry and couldn't wait until snack time. (Fortunately the teacher said no!) Of

course I launched into a full tirade about the impact her frequent coming home

has had on me and how her frequent illness impacts everyone's plans in the

family. I even managed to

go another round when I got home, unzipped her lunch box and found her sandwich

untouched (that her dad had made to her specifications to ensure she ate it...a

little " Just so " OCD I'm afraid. She said she couldn't eat it because it was

" squished. " ).

Oh well...I did pretty well on my assignment and can't aspire to perfection! I

did want to share a new tool we're trying for anxiety-related psychosomatic

symptoms that Dr. Hatton shared with me the other day, for anyone else whose

kids are prone to headaches and tummy aches. He suggested that when she's

feeling well that we take 15 minutes to notice what wellness feels like in her

stomach, head, legs, etc. to store it for later retrieval. Then when she notices

she's feeling bad, she should note

how bad on a 1 to 10 hierarchy. Then she imagines a little dial on her chest and

turning the pain down one notch, then another, and another towards that wellness

feeling. This reminds me of Dr. Chansky's technique for turning down the volume

for intrusive thoughts (which worked extremly well at bedtime one night BTW.)

Dr. Hat says it may take a little practice, but actually works quite well in

children. So we'll see..

Take care,

in San Diego

" perfectionism " . <VBG> Thanks for the info on the CBT re:

psychosomatic/hypochondriacal symptoms. Take care, aloha, Kathy (H)

Neem,

I was born and raised in Mountain View! When I read your post I got a bit homesick, although I've now lived away from there longer than I actually lived there. My parents are still there - have been in the same house since 1960. I have a friend in Los Altos whose adopted baby has plagio, but my mom said that they are taking the "wait and see" approach and things seem to be rounding out. So I guess she's not going to pt. I'll keep my eyes and ears open for you and see if I hear of anybody in the area you could see.
