Guest guest
Hi Dee many moms have gone on with 2nd helmets and have banded their children after 12 months of age and have had great success. This is a very personal decision to make. You still have room for growth and you can either achieve that with helmet therapy or having nature take its course since your babies head is now in the right direction. Do you have any recent pictures you could post? How do you feel-do you feel like the helmet has been effective and can you still notice flatness or only if you are looking? I know hair plays a factor- but just because she is a girl does not mean hair will hide everything- are her pony tails going to be symmetrical are her facial features symmetrical i shaved half my head in high school- it was not a pretty site and I didn't have plagio:-) I think you can see success with a 2nd helmet but talk to your ortho about it at length and ask her how much more she thinks this 2nd band would benefit her. We used the doc and were very pleased with everything. If you trust your ortho's opinion and the DR's then you have to really follow your mommy instincts. How much has your daughters head grown since she has been wearing the helmet. How long was she in her first one??? I wish you peace and luck with making a decision this is so so tough! Welcome and am so glad you have found us. You will find much support and friendship here! beck
Guest guest
Dee, I have two boys that have had DOC bands. My oldest son, now 2 1/2, got his first band when he was 10 months old. He then went through two more bands, finally graduating when he was 22 months. It is true that you won't see as drasctic of a change as you did with the first band, but there is still some correction. I don't know if we would have continued on with the third band if our insurance hadn't paid for it. He did get some correction, but as he got older, it got harder for us to get him to keep it on. Our younger son was in his first band at four months, and now at 14 months just went into his third band. His had shape was much more severe than my older son was, so he is still seeing much correction in this band. The possibility of a fourth band exists for us, but we will cross that bridge when we come to it. The therapist at Cranial Tech has told us from the beginning that her head shape is severe and she would need a second, maybe third band. So when we went to the cranial facial surgeron yesterday for a re-check and another prescription, he said no to another band ! He said her head has been corrected enough that a lay person won't see anything wrong ( and a little more hair will hide it). But mainly because she is almost 12 months old, she wouldn't get enough correction to justify a second band. He ultimately left the decision up to us but his personal opinion was "no". Help!! I'm pleased with the progress we've seen so far, but I'd like to see a little more change. But if the change is minimal like the doctor said, I see the point of putting her through this again. Has anyone had a second band after 12 months and was it worth it?DeeGeorgiaFor more plagio info
Guest guest
Dee, About a month ago posted that her son Reid had just graduated after about 4 months in a DOC band. He started at 19 (almost 20) months of age and got approximately 95% correction. I can't remember his severity, but to get 95% correction of any misshape is awesome. If my insurance would have paid, I would have put Sam into a second band. We have had more rounding since he graduated, but I'm sure he would have benefitted from a second band even more. Good luck with your decision. Gail, Sam and Sara's mom, DOC grads Second helmet after 12 months old I have an 11 month old daughter who has been in a doc band for 2 and a half months.
