Second helmet after 12 months old

I have an 11 month old daughter who has been in a doc band for 2 and

a half months. She will be getting it off on Monday, October 7. The

therapist at Cranial Tech has told us from the beginning that her

head shape is severe and she would need a second, maybe third band.

So when we went to the cranial facial surgeron yesterday for a re-

check and another prescription, he said no to another band ! He said

her head has been corrected enough that a lay person won't see

anything wrong ( and a little more hair will hide it). But mainly

because she is almost 12 months old, she wouldn't get enough

correction to justify a second band. He ultimately left the decision

up to us but his personal opinion was " no " . Help!! I'm pleased with

the progress we've seen so far, but I'd like to see a little more

change. But if the change is minimal like the doctor said, I see the

point of putting her through this again.

Has anyone had a second band after 12 months and was it worth it?

Dee,

My daughter was just put into her second DOCband at 14 months. I

can't tell you of any progress just yet, she just got it on Monday.

But I've read MANY posts about " older " babies still getting great

correction beyond 12 months. If Cranial Tech recommends a second band,

(or a third)I'd do it.. without a doubt. It's all they do and I think

they know better than anyone. You have to do what you think is right

for your child. Please keep us posted on your decision.

Hi Dee & welcome to our group!

Glad you have found us.....Your daughter could most definitely get

more improvement with a 2nd band! My daughter who had severe plagio

didn't begin her DOCband treatment til she was 11.5 mos old, she wore

one band for 4.5 mos time & rec'd 50-60% correction which we are

thrilled with. We have many many members whose child has worn a band

after a year of age & have had great results, either with a 2nd band

or their first, and even a 3rd.

So if you feel your daughter could use some more correction as you

said, then go for the 2nd band. Your Dr. is incorrect in what he

told you. As long as the child's skull bones have not yet fused,

which they shouldn't have yet, then there is still time for

improvement with the band.

I am happy though that the Dr. left the decision up to you & will

write the rx if that's what you decide.

Glad to hear your daughter has rec'd good correction so far, that's

terrific. With a fresh new band, I'm sure she'd get more

improvement. Good luck with your decision & please let us know what

you decide to do. Welcome again.

Dee,

We have had quite a few members who have banded their child, either

with a first or secong band, after 12 months. And as far as I can

remember, all have been happy that they did and with the results that

were achieved. The decision is ultimately yours, you have to go with

your gut instinct. Good luck, and keep us posted!!

Dee,

We had banded at 11mos and 3wks. He's been in the helmet for

almost three weeks now and we have seen great progress. He was mild

to begin with and we often (during the process of trying to get the

rx) wondered if it was worth it. Knowing what I know now, it was

very worth it. I don't know how your daughter is with the helmet,

but doesn't even notice it. The worst part for us was the

casting and that was only a few minutes of his life - right? If the

dr will write the rx, your ins will pay (or you don't mind paying for

it yourself), and you're concerned about NOT doing it - then I say GO

FOR IT!! I don't think you'll regret it. I know we don't!

Dee My daughter Mya got her second band when she was13 1/2 months

old. She is now just over 15 months old and we are still seeing

improvement. Myas main problem for the second band was her ears. And

we are seeing lots of improvement with her ears now. SHe was in her

first band for 4 1/2 months and will probably be in her second about

the same amount of time. Her ears have moved more with the second band

then the first band. But her head shape moved more with the first

band but I think because it was so drastic to begin with where as now

its not as bad so you dont notice the improvement as much but we do

notice it. WE had a hard time with the second band I really struggled

with it but came to the decision that the doctor for us had

recommended it so I had to do it just so that I knew I had done all I

could. Good luck
