restoration of Beckett

2 weeks after an ALJ hearing on HBOT reimbursement, 12-year old Jimmy

Freels suddenly lost his Beckett eligibility after 11 years.

Next, after a call to Governor Perdue's Chief of Staff, without

explanation Jimmy's eligibility was just as suddenly restored.

The documentation can be downloaded from

The person who made the final decision to remove his eligibility is

the same person who testified against him two weeks before at the

Administrative Law Judge (ALJ) hearing--Dr , medical

director of the Georgia Medical Care Foundation.

During a call to Georgia state senator Unterman, Ms Unterman

stated the Beckett eligibility criteria had been revised

specifically because of the decisions reached in our 7-year

request/quest for Medicaid coverage of a treatment proven to reverse

brain-injury which can save Georgia Medicaid hundreds of millions

every year if Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (HBOT) is utilized for the

developmentally disabled.

I have repeatedly asked staff at GMCF for an explanation of his

original denial of services, and in turn have also asked for an

explanation for the restoration of his eligibility. I was informed

three days ago that a letter is supposed to be forthcoming from the

legal services department of the Georgia Dept of Community Health,

but that same department has yet to provide answers first requested

seven years ago.

It has been my hope to provide other parents with this information so

as to help them restore and/or maintain the eligibility of their

children too.

At this point, I've come to the conclusion that the most efficient

manner to get something done, to get things moving is to call

Governor Perdue's Chief of Staff and of course Senator Unterman.

They've certainly been the most helpful to me and my family, and I'm

sure they'll be just as glad to help other families too.

Who knows. Maybe they could use our disabled children to make one of

those " Look what Sonny did " television commercials.
