Hi,

I have a couple of questions...

1. when repositioning do i always put my son away from his flat side or should i alternate sides?

2. we are still waiting to get an appt for our son...it might take upto 2 weeks to get it...he had tort on his right side and flatness on his left....so i need to rotate his head to the RIGHT and tilt it to the LEFT....Am i right? just want to make sure i am not doing anything wrong for him....

3. when on his tummy he prefers to look towards left only....i try to rotate his head towards right but he just hates it and cries a lot....is it okay to just let him look where he wants to during tummy time or should i keep trying to rotate his head?

lot of questions from a worried mommy....he does look a lot better to me...atleast he keeps his head away from the flat spot more than he used to....one day at a time i think i will get him better...i hope so...

thanks for any help...

Neem,

You've already gotten great responses for the rest of your questions, so I'll just answer #3 because its an important one for tort. Many times with torticollis, its not that they prefer looking a certain way, but are physically unable to have the strength to work against that tight muscle and turn in that tort direction, the muscle is just so tight that it's working against them. Many times they compensate by looking up, instead of over, or by using their eyes, and not turning their head completely. Your job is to make this happen by encouraging him to look that way with toys, tv, bubbles, put everything of interest to Siddharthe's right side. It's not easy working with tort, and sometimes in pt would cry when the pt would rotate his head to the left (left tort), but its like any therapy working with a stiff muscle, its a slow process, but if not treated, will only get tighter. As your stretching exercises continue and the muscle is more relaxed, it will be easier for him to accomplish the task of looking right. Encourage tummy time, this helps strengthen those neck muscles. When in the high chair, turn it sideways to the tv, and let him really work hard at looking right. Many people have had luck doing this with feeding, giving the spoon only on the tort side to help them work that muscle by turning in that direction, or trying to. Take it slow, you want to help the muscle not hurt it, and overdoing it could be harmful. Good luck at the pt appt. Please keep us posted and if you have not yet done so, I would encourage you to join torticolliskids for lots of tort advice and parents currently going through the motions. Were you able to find the pt at a hospital?
