The following list of dates and events are a part of Summit Learning

Center's FREE PARENT TRAINING seminars. All seminars are on Tuesday

evenings from 6:30-8:00pm. The first hour will be spent on the

seminar and a ½ hour will be spent on parent questions. FREE

childcare will be provided by Alpharetta High School BETA club at

Summit Learning Center. Summit Learning Center is located in

Alpharetta, GA. Please RSVP prior to each seminar that you would

like to attend by calling Shauna at 678-624-1696. Due to

space requirements, these free seminars are limited to PARENTS ONLY.

***Dates are subject to change and based on interest, more than one

seminar may be held per month.

ABC's of Behavior (February 21, 2006)

This workshop will help parents understand their child's behavior by

analyzing the environment surrounding your child and the events that

change their behavior. Parents will walk away able to recognize the

antecedents and consequences of their child's behavior and learn to

identify why your child does what they do.

My Child Won't Follow Directions (March 21, 2006)

This workshop is designed to teach parents why children are not

following directions and ways to teach them to follow directions.

In this workshop, you will learn how to give directions to your

child and what to do if they do not follow directions.

How to Change Your Child's Behavior-Positively/Responding to

Negative Behavior

(April 18, 2006)

Parents will learn to use reinforcement effectively, to bring about

change in a positive manner. We will identify different ways to

reinforce your child. Parents will also learn about how to react to

their child's negative behaviors to bring about an effective change

in the future.

What is ABA, Verbal Behavior, and Discrete Trial Teaching (DTT)?

(May 16, 2006)

Parents will learn what these terms mean and how they work together

to help your child be successful.

Introduction to the Assessment of Basic Language and Learning Skills

(ABLLS)

(June 20, 2006)

An overview of the ABLLS and how to use the ABLLS as your child's

language curriculum. You will learn how to manage your child's

educational goals based on this assessment as well as how to develop

appropriate IEP goals.

Introduction to Verbal Behavior- Manding (Part 1 of 4 part series)-

July 18, 2006

We will discuss the mand as a verbal operant. Parents will learn

what a mand is and how to teach it at your child's language level.

Mands are just as important for the early learner, as they are for

the advanced learner.

Verbal Behavior- Tacts and Intraverbals (August 15, 2006)

We will define tacts and intraverbals as well as how to teach them

to your child. This will not only improve your child's language

skills, but help them move closer to conversational language.

Academics: When is my child ready to learn reading and math?

(September 19, 2006)

A discussion to help parents determine when is the best time to

begin academic teaching of letters, numbers, reading, and math.

This discussion will help you evaluate your child's language skills

versus their academic readiness.

Reading and Math: How do I teach these skills? (October 17, 2006)

We will discuss various reading and math programs as well as analyze

key prerequisite skills your child needs. We will also discuss the

topic of hyperlexia and its effect on your child's learning and

comprehension.
