Adam's casting and poll question

Amy did this and the ped said it was normal but he did it many times a

day-my ped said sometimes when they start urinating it causes shivers and

that their nervous systems are highly sensitive. I cant remember if there was

anything else it could be but I remember it scaring the heck out of me and

taking him to the ped ASAP. The fact that your ped did an EEG is quite

proactive maybe you want to just ask him/her what it could be and if you need

to be aware of any other type of symptoms to look for but honestly did

it all the time!

Just wanted to let you guys know that Adam's casting went well. I was prepared for the worst (me in tears)--but it wasn't that bad. Adam's neurosurg is Dr. Frim and we went to Ballert too (small world, Taryn). Our ortho was Tom, not Jim. He was nice. Didn't cut a hole in the stocking ---said Adam could see and breathe through it fine. Adam wasn't freaking out, so neither did I. He did get a little pissy when Tom started to wrap his head like a mummy---but it was all over in 5 min. The hardest decision was which "wall paper" sample to pick for a design. Sounds like you must have picked white--since you're talking about decorating with stickers. I picked zig zag blue lines and colorful animals. We'll have to post pics when we have some. Poor kid didn't get his hair washed at the ortho and daddy didn't do it before bed. (I had to go to work this evening).

We go back on Mon, Oct 14th for the helmet. Hope he likes it....or at least, doesn't hate it. Also hope Cigna pays. Need a letter of med nec from Dr. Frim. I hate his voice mail---can never talk to an actual person!! We'll go back to Frim 2 weeks later to see how the helmet fits.

Someone wrote that they had a big 25# 1 yr old. Well, my almost 6 month old is almost 25 lbs. We'll get the official weight at the pediatrician on Thurs.

Last thing---I want to take a poll--Adam sometimes has tremors when he's nursing. His head and arms tremble/shudder (like shivers when you're cold). It lasts for 5-15 seconds....and happens about once a day now. The ped. thinks it's nothing to worry about...immature nervous system, etc. Although, she did rec an EEG--which came back normal (this was at his 4 mon appt). Not sure what to do from here---other than hope that he grows out of them. My hubby suggests that I'm just looking for things to be wrong with my son. I'm really not!!! just want a healthy boy (with a nice, round head). I'll prob discuss this again with my ped. next Thurs at Adam's 6 mon appt.

Thanks to all of you for welcoming me so warmly. It's kind of fun sifting through 100 e'mails/day. I think I've been tied to this computer too much. Mostly on after Adam is asleep.

Welcome, Amy and Adam. I am sorry I didn't respond sooner. Did you see Dr. Frim? We got casted on Tues. at Ballert and it was a painless and quick process. The casting material only took about 5 minutes to harden and we were done. My dh held in his lap while I took pictures and it wasn't as bad as I thought it would be. didn't cry when the back part of the cast went on but when he put another stocking over her head (with cut outs for the mouth and nose and somewhat of the eyes of course) and placed the front part she was really crying. As soon as he took it off she was back to normal and took a long nap in the car on the way home. That night she sleep from 7 p.m. until 10 a.m. You will get the helmet a week after the casting. was casted on Tues. and we will go Tues. for her helmet. hasn't gotten hers yet so I can't tell you our experience with adjusting but I have never heard anyone on this list say anything but that their kids adjusted right away. The orthotist told us it becomes like a security blanket for them almost and they actually like having it on. I hope you like Jim...he was a very nice guy and answered the tons of questions I had for him!!! Please let us know how it went today. We also didn't have to give a bottle or anything because it went so quickly she didn't have time to fuss too much.

Please don't feel guilty....I know it's hard and when I first came here I felt the same exact way. I do still feel guilty sometimes but I know I am doing what is best for by getting this taken care of. also has tort and we are getting physical therapy for that.

Hi all. I'm a new member and have already learned so much--reading all of your e'mails (including who's older than who I'm 30....but more importantly my son, Adam, is 5 1/2 mons old. I want to share my story (vent) and would love to read any comments/suggestions you guys can offer.

At his 4 mon appt. I mentioned that several people had pointed out a flat spot on Adam's head. My pediatrician was pro-active and recommended a CT scan. We had that done two days later and the !%@$%@^%@$ radiologist interpreted the CT as craniostenosis of the left lamboidal suture. So, off to the neurosurgeon we went----it took a month to get in for that consult. Meanwhile, we didn't try any positional changes, because I was under the impression that his little bones were fusing prematurely and had nothing to do with position. I hadn't noticed him favoring that side and he doesn't have tort. Anyway, the neurosurg informed us that his sutures were fine and that it was "positional plagiocephaly". Suggested the helmet vs. trying to do the positioning thing. I just don't think we'd be able to keep him from rolling around now---he'll be free-er in the helmet. His appt witht he othotist is on Friday--for the casting. I saw some pics of what to expect on the CAPPS website. I can only guess how much of a fuss Adam will make. Any suggestions to make the ordeal any less of an ordeal?? He doesn't take a pacifier. I'm sure it's harder on me, than on him.

My other issue is how guilty I feel about my baby's deformed head. I have no idea if it's mild, mod or severe (the neurosurg pointed out how his ears are assymetrical---which seems to be common with all of your kids too), but feel like I should have done something. Like I said before, I never noticed him laying towards that side----but he must have been....how else would his head have gotten flat. It wasn't in utero or during the whole birthing process. What's done is done---now I just want to fix it.

So, Friday will be our big day. Going to Ballert (as per neurosurg rec). How long should it take to get the helmet--after the casting?? How long did it take your kids to adjust to having the helmet on. Hopefully it's no big whoop. We'll find out soon enough.

does this too- can't remember but I think either someone here or a Doctor said they do that when they pee sometimes and not to worry.
