Hi Folks....

Interesting stuff coumarin.....

Precursor to among other things warfarin...which can be good or bad

depending....

Blood thinner and at one time rat-poison....

You don't wanta know how I ran across that bit of info....

It was a positive component item for many perfume substances at one time...

Has been precluded from food use for some time.....

Make sure yer vanilla is real....

So Anya do you recommend that we take into account

the amount of comarin when we devise a product.

Can you get too much of it?

I got this Q. from reading about sweet flag

(I think that is Calamus root)

and many grasses are supposed to have it as a

survival " Oh bugs, please don't eat me " strategy.

Because it is used in rat poisen and Wayfarin

which they use to treat alshiemers (sp) disease i thought I better

Check our knowledge base.

Hi again.....

Calamus EO (aka sweet flag), if I remember correctly, I didn't know

associated with coumarin, but asarone....

Asarone has the rep of being carcinogenic....

Varies in concentration, depends on where it's from....

I do know of a supplier of low asarone calamus.....Nature's Gift (Marge

).....

I have a calamus EO....and it makes what's left of my hair go up...

I believe it's also one of the components (calamus or sweet flag) of the

holy anointing oil of the Biblical Hebrews...

Coumarin is a *precursor* to warfarin....

Warfarin at one time being used as rat poison....in Milwaukee I believe

the flavor was vanilla-peanut butter...

Warfarin being an anti-coagulant, the antidote for which is vitamin K....

Rats cannot produce vitamin K metabolically...so....

I told ya, ya didn't wanta know....

Warfarin has been used also to facilitate surgery and therapies....when

coagulation might be an issue...

It's been largely replaced by more modern compounds....

Just because it's derivatives are bad for you doesn't mean coumarin

itself is bad. It was used in food for a long time. A lot of people

think they jumped the gun in banning and limiting it so much.

Hi Again....

Good point....

But there's some folks out there want to ban several citrus expressed EO

from products, based on toxicity...???

LD50 for a guy like me (180 lbs) for coumarin is about 22 grams...

It's a toxin, that can do a number on yer liver...

Which means I'd really have to work to mess myself up...

And I don't plan on drinking tonka bean any time soon..

But...if yer selling a 'fume or personal care product...you really

should have a handle on what's in there....

Because the legislators, who usually don't have a clue which way is

up....have a habit of doing weird things...

BTW.....if ya want to....

You can buy coumarin outright.....

The Good Scents Company....which is a good place to bookmark anyway,

just for the references....

Ya can spend hours at their site.....
