why are conventional perfumers so judgemental?

I just have to rant a bit...

I belong to another egroup that is mainly conventional perfumers but

also a few natural ones...yesterday, a new person joined who has

considerable experience in the perfume industry as a nose...and BOY did

he go to work on us natural perfumers in his INTRO email!

As far as he was concerned, natural perfumery is " pure bullshit " dreamed

up by a bunch of amateurs who will eventually die out!

I was speachless! But in the end penned a very polite email back saying

that this was a rather rude way to introduce himself, and that the

matter of synthetic versus natural was a personal choice, a bit like in

any other form of art, you choose the medium you like to work with. And

that both kinds of perfumery have their strengths, uses and weakenesses....

What really shocked me was the answers from the rest of the group. With

a very few exceptions backing this loudmouth arrogant pratt wholeheartedly.

I had heard some of you speak about this narro minded arrogance in the

perfume industry before...but I had no idea it was so virulent.

Why is this? Ok, I don't like a lot of chemical based perfumes and

choose not to work with them...but why does anyone else care? Why do

these mainstream people start frothing at the mouth at the mere mention

of " natural " ?

Why is it so important for them to insist over and over that it

impossible to create a great, long lasting perfume with natural

ingredients? It's blatantly not true.

I'm just gobsmacked.....
