Guest guest
Scent is on of the best ways to create an atmosphere. And what holiday is more atmospheric than Halloween? From dark, mysterious nights to sweet candy-filled trick-or-treating, bright orange pumpkins and caramel colored harvests, October and Halloween are full of rich, autumny aromas. This list is a selection of scents and botanicals that I feel best conjures the feel of the holiday. I divided them up into three general themes: Dark, Mysterious, and Mystical;scents that evoke an eerie or magical aura, many have been used as sacred scents for eons bringing humans closer to the spiritual worlds; Harvest; those that create a Harvest Home atmosphere, and Trick Or Treat; odors that bring to mind candy and treats. These are scents to be used as incense, to scent soaps, candles, room sprays, potpourris, and sachets, and fill dream pillows, or to make your own perfumes. Of course I prefer to use authentic botanicaly derived extracts and essences as opposed to synthetic fragrances, so this list will lean toward my biases. Happy Haunting! Dark, Mysterious, Mystical Agarwood/Oud/Aloeswood(this oil is really pricey, but you can find reasonablly priced incense) Amber/Labdanum Bay Benzoin Cinnamon(careful, this essential oil can burn the skin) incense Lavender(to see spirits, the absolute smells like the whole herb, its great to use) Myrhh Mugwort( opens the second sight, the essential oil is poisonous, so use the whole herb for dream pillows, incense) Nutmeg Oakmoss Patchouli Sandalwood Vetiver Wormwood(the same as mugwort) Harvest Allspice Apple(there is no essence of apples, the best way to get this scent naturally is to simply put out a bowl of apples!) Cinnamon Clove Ginger Hazelnut Mandarin Nutmeg Pumpkin(there is no essence of pumpkin, however to get that moist, green, earthy smell of pumpkin flesh, substiute clary sage essential oil) Orange Tangerine Trick Or Treat Almond Balsam Peru Butter Chocolate/Cacao Cinnamon Clove(this essential oil can also irritate the skin) Mandarin Orange Nutmeg Tangerine Tonka Bean(smells like maple and brown sugar, with hints of almond and vanilla) Vanilla Sources of items: Eden Botanicals www.edenbotanicals.com Liberty Natural www.libertynatural.com Scents Of Earth www.scents-of-earth.com Incense Guru www.incenseguru.com
Guest guest
For the VERY simple minded, like me, I do the candles in Anise Star, particularly votives. A simple anise scented votive in the pumpkin makes you a HERO in eyes of accompanying parents and grandparents for the States version of Halloween. They are so strong you have your whole " outdoor " porch smelling of floating licorice treats. Considering there's many of us who bite into licorice and immediately transport to a Halloween bag of treats, How perfect it's one of the cheapest essential oils and keeps it's scent true when the candle is burning.
