Turkish Rose otto (the distilled EO form of rose essences)....I wouldn't be without it...I only have Bulgarian in the absolute... When I first encountered it, I thought " What? " .....I was expecting it to smell....like...roses smell... It doen't of course....for two reasons.... First of all it is highly concentrated....so your thought to dilute is correct.... Second....not all of the scent components come through to the EO..... That's why rose hydrosol, which is pretty nice stuff, too, happens..... Try your diluted EO's on a strip or a coffee filter, and hang them up...Bottle sniffing is kinda unreliable... As a newbie, expect your scent perception to change as you deal with this stuff more and more....it does for most people... Give it some time....you may be surprised... " Magic " is subjective, though.... I have a Zambian musk rose abs that's stunning, almost " magic " .....most of the other absolutes I have are so-so.... I like Turk rose otto quite a bit.... " Magic " for me happens with jasmine absolute, concrete and floral wax... With Wilde's flourocarbon jasmine extract of yore.. Across the board...grandiflorum moreso than sambac... Love, raving desire, even, at first sniff....<G>.....! And....*that* particular perception has never changed.... -- W. Bourbonais L'Hermite Aromatique A.J.P. Hi , A very good and interesting set of questions. I find that I waver on rose. Sometimes I'm in love with it and over the moon for it, and sometimes I revert back to my old " this is the scent of all the little old ladies " frame of mind. Why? Who knows? Maybe because I've been smelling highly fragrant roses for way longer than I've had access to my high quality rose oils - so my nose was accustomed to the " whole enchilada " before I found the oils. What said was right on. And then we get into blending... : ) I find that I really want rose to be present in an awful lot of blends (maybe even most of them). It does all sorts of magical things with other oils. Like sandalwood. Cardamom. Patchouli. Try it with black pepper. It really does play so well with others - I can't think of anything that it doesn't do well with. I wonder if anyone has any rose horror stories... (I'd almost be willing to wager that it's rare.) Cheers! Andrine

I thought it would smell like roses as well. What dilution rate do you recommend to appreciate its scent appropriately? I want to purchase rose hydrosol as well, love to smell that. > Try your diluted EO's on a strip or a coffee filter, and hang them > up...Bottle sniffing is kinda unreliable... Will try this, haven't had the chance to yet. > " Magic " for me happens with jasmine absolute, concrete and floral wax... > With Wilde's flourocarbon jasmine extract of yore.. > Across the board...grandiflorum moreso than sambac... I have jasmine too, and I love, love, love its scent! It's so intoxicating (which is what I thought would happen with the rose...) I've never heard of Wilde's flourocarbon jasmine, I guess I will have to do some research on this. Thanks so much for your response. Btw, I got my diamonds certificate from GIA years ago and started the colored stones course but never got to finished... fun courses... Hi Andrine, thanks for the suggestions, unfortunately, I don't have any of those oils yet It sounds like black pepper is a popular oil here so it's on my " to get " list (well-all those above are on the list, among many others...) I did a simple combo of jasmine and rose in jojoba and even I'm enjoying it quite a bit. It seems like rose is really important in blends to " round out " the fragrance and add complexity (so I've been reading), although on its' own, I'm " ehh " about it (right now anyway) Thanks,

Once upon a time, I diluted it a " bunch " until it smelled nice to me... When I use it in a blend, I use full strength.... I seem to have seen 10% strength mentioned by folks who sell it? > I have jasmine too, and I love, love, love its scent! It's so intoxicating (which is what I > thought would happen with the rose...) Gemstones are even crazier in some cases than the essences industry...Naturals and Synthetics and treated, lotsa stuff going on...<G>... -- W. Bourbonais L'Hermite Aromatique A.J.P. They were only suggestions. Again, rose seems to play well with everything I've tried it with. And it sounds like you're already trying it with other stuff with fun results. Yay! Guest guest
Hi , Thanks, I'm gonna try to dilute until I like the smell. I'll also try the 10% dilution. It's scary to experiment with it cause its so expensive...but I must keep in mind its for fun and enjoyment! There is some so much happening in the gemstone world, I've been out of the industry for a while now so I haven't kept up with it, though. Take care,
Guest guest
I am enjoying playing, but in time I will be getting more oils, but before that, I plan on picking up Essence and Alchemy by Mandy Aftel as a starting reference. The book sounds wonderful, it seems to come highly recommended on the NP site. Take care,
