Guest guest
While this may be off topic of a sorts I have some questions regarding soap scent fixatives and wonder if any of the natural scent soap makers here can answer or comment. I make a eau de cologne type soap scent and, being as how citrus scents are so volatile and readily evaporate not only during the cold process saponification process but in storage as well, I typically add enough Citrus EO blend to compensate for this evaporation in addition to adding some " heavy " fixatives EOs (Cedar, Patchouli, Vetiver) The effect that I look to achieve is a soap with enough " sillage " (a term valid for soap scenting?) so that the soap will have a good, viable scent when sitting in the soap dish but not so much that it causes a scent " overload " when the soap is used and that it only leaves a light scent on the skin. I recently made a batch of this Citrus blend and I thought to try an addition of Labdanum absolute.Everything saponified and all with nary any problems but when unmolding the soap slab I could detect virtually no scent despite adding the typical amount of EO blend as usual (and compensating for the addition of the Labdanum). BUT in using the soap the scent was all there. Now, I suppose that this soap is likely to retain it's scent for far longer than the blend without the Labdanum, the silage factor is virtually nil. Sillage is partially a selling factor. Obviously Labdanum worked wonders in retarding Citrus EO evaporation. I guess my question here is: is the addition of fixatives such that one needs to compensate for the " muting " of scents by the addition of more of the readily volutized EOs? Perhaps I used too many " fixatives " or in too great a quantity? My objective to to make a Citrus scented soap that will retain it's scent as many of my previous experimental batches without fixatives lost a lot of their scent in the saponification phase and by the time they were cut and ready to sell the scent had all but faded. Any other soapers here care to share info on fixatives that they use for Citrus and/ or other readily volatile EO's? thanks Ron
