Guest guest
Hi , I drafted a reply to you earlier this week, but we have been experiencing cable modem problems all week and the original is floating in cyberspace. In your email asking about colleges, you don't mention if your daughter has an IEP. If she does, she should be entitled to certain accommodations that would be given to her when she takes the SAT's. I know that some kids take them untimed, or they get permission to take them orally, etc. Although I do not know of a " list " somewhere that will tell which colleges are disability friendly, there are many that are taking more of an interest in this area. This past October, I chaired an event at our school district with Mooney, Author of Learning Outside the Lines. Jon is a recent graduate of Brown University. He has dyslexia and AD/HD. He graduated summa cum laude in English Literature and his book details the strategies that he used to gain entry into Brown and the subsequent accommodations that he utilized while there. Jon is a charismatic speaker and writer and he gave hope to many, many people, kids, parents and teachers alike who heard his message. BTW, his SAT scores were very low, and this did not keep him out of Brown! You may want to get a copy of his book to read in order to begin to feel a bit better about what is most definitely an overwhelming task to begin working on. I also remember in the last few months that either or Jule posted a listing in our archives of Parent information type offices for each state. It would be worthwhile to contact the organization in your state in order to obtain information about accommodating your daughter is she takes SAT's/Act's. I currently have a son who will be graduating this spring who does not have disabilities and the task of choosing a college is confusing enough. I will be curious to hear what you find out as I need to get ready for the day when my 8 yr. old OCD'er is ready to go! What a day that will be! Blessings, in Southeastern PA ---------------------------------
