Guest guest Posted October 9, 2001 Report Share Posted October 9, 2001 Sorry it took me so long to respond to this one, but... the reason ice floats is because it is less dense than water...but the reason that ice is less dense than water is related to hydrogen bonding... when water freezes to solid ice, the hydrogen bond become a three dimensional crystal and becasue of the arrangement of the water molecules the crystal in effect has holes and these holes create a volume for ice that is geater than that for an equal mass of liquid water...since its volume is greater than that of water, its density is less than that of water...
