I must tell you that I deeply sympathize with you position.  I am on day three

of an all nighter with evvie, and I am dead on my feet.  I know I will only

invite the wrath of our membership by suggesting this, but I think it is time

you consider mood stablizers for your child.  Even on nearly 300 mg. of

seroquel, which is 1/2 the adult dose, once every four weeks my daughter goes

through phases where she stays up all night and perpetrates unusual events.  It

used to be more.  These kids are very sick and need help.  I don't know how to

interpret what you are seeing, but suffice to say, your child has a reason for

her actions.  Unfortunately, at this time. all we can do is to control it.

I hope to God you find relief.

Hello. I need help yet again. Juilanna, who is ten, is waking up at around one

in the morning and is just wandering everywhere being very destructive. She used

to get up and come find me. (the good old days) Now I don't sleep so I can hear

when she gets up. She has gotten up, let all the dogs out of their crates (I'm

in a rescue) took down all the gates to the bedrooms, let the bird out (who was

killed by one of the dogs), lost the hamster (haven't found him yet) put yet

another hole in her wall, and was just not herself at all. She has broken

everything in her room so she only has her bed and dresser at this point. During

the days she has started this high pitched screaming (the kind that goes right

through you) has become quite agitated and doesn't hear me at all when I try to

talk to her. When she does listen to me she doesn't understand what I am

saying.? She used to get really upset when an animal died, but now she doesn't

have any reaction

whatsoever. I don't get it. I cannot figure out what in the world is waking her

up. I have noticed that her fingernails are purple and she has dark circles

under her eyes and she is very pale. She does have seizures which she takes

medication and has the VNS for to help control them. It's so weird because one

minute she's fine, the next minute she's screaming, she hates me, she's flailing

all over the place?and I'm so afraid she's going to hurt herself. She's hooked

up for her feeds at night but she's been ripping that out too. I'm trying to

figure out a way to keep her in her room so she'll?be safe but not seem inhumane

at the same time. We have an appointment with the Neurologist on Thursday but I

wanted to post here because at least everyone here understands. If anyone has

any suggestions I would really, really appreciate it!

Thanks!

Hello Pam,

My Daughter Sara is 6.5 years and has always wandered at night.  I know those

shrill screams and rages.  My daughter too has a complicated seizure disorder

(her neurologist has only mentioned the vns once, but I'm going to ask about it,

she's still uncontrolled).  I haven't noticed that her nails are purple, but she

gets the pink circles under her eyes.  My doctor keeps asking me if she takes a

vitamin.  She takes one about 50% of the time, she just doesn't like them.  I

notice the circles more when she is tired.  I think a ot of the behaivor issue

is sleep deprovation (just my opinion). Oh, Sara takes depacote and

lamictal...for now. (We've tried her on a lot of other meds too.)

My wandering issue is over feeding the fish, pulling everything out of the

fridge, and she sometimes leaves the house, I can deal with the other messes she

makes for now.  I'm putting a padlock on the fridge, getting a new apartment

that will put better locks on the doors, and going to start her back on

meletonin again.  Seriously for their own safety I have no problem locking them

in their rooms at night...I just dread the clean up of body waste if she can't

get to the bathroom and if someone new comes over sees the lock and might report

me.  You might want to ask the doctor (if not the neuro a developmental pedi)

for a script for locks on the door or some good alternatives?  If your doc

reccomends something let me know please!!!  I'd love to be able to fiz this

problem too!

Every three or four weeks? Could it be parasites hatching and causing

her grief on a regular cycle?

Sara has been on mood stabalizers...they didn't help.  The seizures disrupt

their brain wves during sleep and for my child her seizures are what is causing

the problem.  If her daughter has a VNS, she has a pretty severe seizure

disorder...

I'd type more but I have to go find a maitanece guy for my apt(it just turned

8am and if I don't catch them first thing I'm screwed)...We are moving, such

fun!!!!

My daughter, who will be 7 in two weeks, stays up until about 3am

everynight if I don't give her meletonin. She still sometimes wakes

up very early (4am) if she has to go to the bathroom or something

wakes her up, then she's usually up for a few hours and then tries to

crash back to sleep around 6am, this goes over real well on school

days, :)

I'm lucky that the only thing she does is turn on the computer or tv.

She will pour herself a cup of milk and usually leaves the door open

with the milk on the counter though. She has realized how to insert

the key into the deadbolt to get out of the house though. We have

deadbolts on the inside of our doors so you need a key to get out, so

we've had to move the keys, I'm scared she will try to leave in the

middle of the night. I honestly think she would just sit in my car

and wait for someone and if no one came she;d come back in.

The only advice I could offer would be meletonin and door alarms.

Putting them on her bedroom door might keep her from opening it or at

least it would wake you up to put her back to bed.

Good Luck!

>

> Hello. I need help yet again. Juilanna, who is ten, is waking up at

around one in the morning and is just wandering everywhere being very

destructive. She used to get up and come find me. (the good old days)

Now I don't sleep so I can hear when she gets up. She has gotten up,

let all the dogs out of their crates (I'm in a rescue) took down all

the gates to the bedrooms, let the bird out (who was killed by one of

the dogs), lost the hamster (haven't found him yet) put yet another

hole in her wall, and was just not herself at all. She has broken

everything in her room so she only has her bed and dresser at this

point. During the days she has started this high pitched screaming

(the kind that goes right through you) has become quite agitated and

doesn't hear me at all when I try to talk to her. When she does

listen to me she doesn't understand what I am saying.? She used to

get really upset when an animal died, but now she doesn't have any

reaction whatsoever. I don't get it. I cannot figure out what in the

world is waking her up. I have noticed that her fingernails are

purple and she has dark circles under her eyes and she is very pale.

She does have seizures which she takes medication and has the VNS for

to help control them. It's so weird because one minute she's fine,

the next minute she's screaming, she hates me, she's flailing all

over the place?and I'm so afraid she's going to hurt herself. She's

hooked up for her feeds at night but she's been ripping that out too.

I'm trying to figure out a way to keep her in her room so she'll?be

safe but not seem inhumane at the same time. We have an appointment

with the Neurologist on Thursday but I wanted to post here because at

least everyone here understands. If anyone has any suggestions I

would really, really appreciate it!

My daughter, who will be 7 in two weeks, stays up until about 3am

everynight if I don't give her meletonin. She still sometimes wakes

up very early (4am) if she has to go to the bathroom or something

wakes her up, then she's usually up for a few hours and then tries to

crash back to sleep around 6am, this goes over real well on school

days, :)

Night wandering is a serious problem, I would do what ever is necessary to keep

you child safe. My friends son with autism was a night wanderer, she would

sleep with her bed against his bedroom door so she would wake if he got up. The

last time he was up for three days straight, mom fell asleep on the couch around

3-4 am with him in her arms. At 5 am she awoke to the front door open. Long

story short, he left the house went down the dirt road on to a major road and

was hit by a truck around 5 am. He died instantly. He was on a lot of meds,

including chloral hydrate for sleeping and it did not help, if he wanted to be

awake he would.

On another note, my godson is having VNS surgery tomorrow. He has multiple

seizures daily and is on a lot of seizure meds. Dr. say this is not a cure but

will help reduce them also VNS helps to stabilize mood- they are now using it as

a treatment for depression and other mood disorders.

Oh my! How horrible for your friend!

We've had several cases over the last few years where a child with autism

has gotten away from their caregivers at night and wandered into area lakes

and drowned. Breaks my heart.

My daughter sleeps with me. Not something I ever really wanted to start, but

it just kinda happened out of necessity. When she was a baby she slept in a

bassinet near my bed then moved into her crib in her room, when her seizures

started at 7mo. we moved her crib into our room and it stayed there till she

out grew it (Tent and all) We've tried moving her back to her room a few

times and moved her big sister in with her. But finding out she was having

seizures at night we moved her back in with me.

She has stopped getting up in the night for awhile now, which I'm so

thankful for, because I was getting so exhausted with the waking up so much.

But I knew that with her in my bed, I would wake up if she was getting out

of the bed. We also have our alarm system set to chime when any exterior

door is opened and Dad is a very light sleeper and would hear it for sure.

Otherwise we can set our alarm to a STAY feature and if the door is opened

it sets the alarm off right away and would scare her enough to stall her

till one of us reached her and got her inside and turn off the alarm.

We also put chain locks on the doors up high, but it didn't take long before

she realized that she just needed to climb up on something to get it off.

Thankfully she has passed that stage too and doesn't really try to go out

now without us. Used to be that if you turned your back for a few seconds

she'd be out the door, naked! LOL She hated to wear clothes and would strip

down to nothing within minutes of you putting them on her. Then i'd have to

chase her around the yard while she squealed with delight! LOL

It devastated my friend he was her only child and her life. It has taken along

time for her to start living again. My godson, has lots of seizures and used to

get up at night and bang his head on the floor, he could not open doors. His

teacher wanted to teach him to open doors but his mom told her absolutely not.

(Just one of many disagreements with that teacher). He now sleeps in a tent,

with the mattress inside the tent on the bed. He is zipped in at night so he

won't get up or fall out. He is unable to unzip the tent.

the dark circles could be food allergies. very common with asd. my

daughter is severe and has always had severe sensory problems

and gastrointestinal issues the go along with her diagnosis that cause sleep

issues. we used to use med's to help her sleep but took many

years and healed up her gut, and have her almost totally weaned from

prescription meds. melatonin caused the opposite affect..............

sleeplessness. this can happen. my nt daughter tried it a few times and

she said she had vivid dreams and woke up and could not go

back to sleep the rest of the night. i have found that using L-theanine in

combo with inositol has been very, very calming and effective.

she sleeps from about 9 pm till 5 or 6 am, no waking. also i found in the

past that constipation or any discomfort has caused night waking...........

she said she had vivid dreams and woke up and could not go

back to sleep the rest of the night. i have found that using L-theanine in

combo with inositol has been very, very calming and effective.

she sleeps from about 9 pm till 5 or 6 am, no waking. also i found in the

past that constipation or any discomfort has caused night waking...........

Hello. I need help yet again. Juilanna, who is ten, is waking up at around

one in the morning and is just wandering everywhere being very destructive.

She used to get up and come find me. (the good old days) Now I don't sleep

so I can hear when she gets up. She has gotten up, let all the dogs out of

their crates (I'm in a rescue) took down all the gates to the bedrooms, let

the bird out (who was killed by one of the dogs), lost the hamster (haven't

found him yet) put yet another hole in her wall, and was just not herself at

all. She has broken everything in her room so she only has her bed and

dresser at this point. During the days she has started this high pitched

screaming (the kind that goes right through you) has become quite agitated

and doesn't hear me at all when I try to talk to her. When she does listen

to me she doesn't understand what I am saying.? She used to get really upset

when an animal died, but now she doesn't have any reaction

whatsoever. I don't get it. I cannot figure out what in the world is waking

her up. I have noticed that her fingernails are purple and she has dark

circles under her eyes and she is very pale. She does have seizures which

she takes medication and has the VNS for to help control them. It's so weird

because one minute she's fine, the next minute she's screaming, she hates

me, she's flailing all over the place?and I'm so afraid she's going to hurt

herself. She's hooked up for her feeds at night but she's been ripping that

out too. I'm trying to figure out a way to keep her in her room so she'll?be

safe but not seem inhumane at the same time. We have an appointment with the

Neurologist on Thursday but I wanted to post here because at least everyone

here understands. If anyone has any suggestions I would really, really

appreciate it!

Thanks!

Pam and nna 10 YRS.

I agreee with that in this situation you should probably try

mood stabilizers or medicine and also immediately start investigating

the purple finger nails. I remember at some point hearing this was

related to oxygen somehow.

You're in our thoughts and prayers.

Ahh, the neighborhood streaker!  That would be my child!!!  I'm moving, but my

current neighbors just laugh and help me coral her.  The worst time was when she

got out and I was in the shower with shampoo in my hair and I heard the door.

You can imagine the scramble to throw on whatever clothes were closest.  My new

apartment manager has told me he will put on whatever locks I need to keep her

in.  It's nice to have a landlord that will with you.  My current apartment the

management told me that additional locks would be a fire hazard and they have

the doorknobs that open from the inside even when locked...great for locking

yourself out!!!  And great for naked escape artists.  It was kinda cute when she

was 4...not so cute at six.
