Why is he suggesting prozac? Please understand that medications do

have their place and they can help, but they should never be a first

line of defense. Trying supplements, diets, behavioral therapy and

other therapies should be the first line of defense. You never know the

problem might get resolved at that level and there is no need for the

drugs. Psychiatrists, and other physicians have been trained in drug

therapy alone, it's all they know, so they prescribe drugs.

In Europe Prozac and all similar SSRI's are banned for use on anyone

under 18 years of age because of the suicide ideations they can cause,

among other side effects. In the US they have a warning on them, but

they can still be prescribd to kids.

First of all, this medication has not been researched and is not approved for

use in ASD children. That doesn't mean that doctors can't prescribe it, because

85% of all medications prescribed are not for the purpose they are researched.

But not even going that far into the discussion, have you tried everything else?

Do you really feel comfortable giving a child this heavy of a SSRI? Apparently

you have reservations because you asked the list. I can't and will not tell

you yes or no, that is your decision, but have you absolutely, positively

exhausted every other possible remedy for your child, including the biomedical

approach and lifestyle changes, ABA, etc? Remember that Prozac only does one

thing: mask symptoms. That can be good for the parents and the doctor, but is

it good for the child?

This is an interesting study, but the only thing that it really says is

that 2/3 of the people either got worse or saw no change. There was no

real mention of side effects of Prozac here, as it was really just a

review of the literature on medications. This is still a parental

decision, but the ARI review pretty much would lead a reaonsable person

to ask questions before paying for the medications.

If you would like to contact me off-list, I would be glad to share our

experiences with SSRIs.

I am not considering it.

I was asking because I question the psyquiatrist about what will be the

purpose, and he just said it will help with their anxiety and agressive

behavior, not the autism of course.

I tried several things, where we live there is no ABA I ha done as much as

possible to get their therapies and school things to the max and they are

getting as much sensory therapy.

But I was asking cause. I want it to see if someone had tried with their

children.

Thank you for the advice.

Temple Grendin advices to introduce to some children while puberty.

So I was trying to learn from others experiences.

Please do extensive research on all drugs. I've heard a lot of negative

feedback re Prozac and adults. I wouldn't give my child Prozac.
