Guest guest
One place that you might try is Left Brain/Right Brain <http://leftbrainrightbrain.co.uk/> ... blogs a fair bit about prevalence and incidence statistics, and always includes links to the original studies/census data. I'd try searching for either prevalence or incidence and see what you come up with. For stats before 2007 I'd try Autism Diva <http://autismdiva.blogspot.com/search?q=prevalence> ...she's not blogging any more, but she also had links to original studies and census data. It's definitely not a US problem only. Jen l_a_kenney wrote: > > Does anyone know where I can find statistics on autism rates around > the world. Guest guest
Hey  I am in Australia and our stats are pretty close to that of the USA. 1 in 150 children is what the government is claiming , those in the community and organisations dealing with these families believe it to be more like 1 in 90. Due to undiagnosis or misdiagnosis , our rural area's average age for a correct diagnosis is 11..... Big difference I live in a rural town but knew what to ask , knew what I was dealing with when Amy almost 4 was diagnosed almost 12 months ago now. Been there done that with my Aspie son Tim , so I guess its about being informed. I think if you even sort of sound like you know what your speaking about your taken a bit more seriously. I know these numbers won't be accurate for many countries due to the lack of resources. I have been having discussions with people who insist that this is a problem only in the United States, or that the US must have a rate 2-3 times that of other nations. Any help I can get on this would be appreciated! Guest guest
Thanks! It is so hard to explain to people that good number world wide are hard to get. Not everyone has the access to the same level of health care. I read something that said that China only has 100 doctors qualified to Dx autism, but that they estimated that 4% of China's population had autism. People don't understand that it isn't like the US everywhere. I need to look into studies out of the middle east I guess. I know of at least two; one is an ongoing cousin marriage study and the other found that the older the father was at the time of conception the rate of autism climbed. Anyway, thanks for the info! Guest guest
Incidence Numbers from Other Countries Home> Autism Community> Autism Around the World> Incidence Numbers from Other Countries * Resources in Other Countries * Incidence Numbers from other Countries Despite the lack of prevalence data on autism worldwide, there are emerging trend numbers that suggest that tens of millions of children and adults have ASD. As the numbers increase, the resulting costs of this lifespan condition on national economies rise concurrently; by 2010, estimates of the cost of caring for the estimated 1.75 million Americans with ASD will reach $90 billion per year. In countries such as India, Russia and Nigeria, these costs could cripple a nation¢s health and education budgets within a few years. While the World Health Organization (WHO) does not maintain global statistics on the prevalence of autism spectrum disorders or appropriate treatments specifically, its 2007 Global Burden of Disease report on mental and neurological disorders highlighted the critical situation the world faces with a growing population that includes those with autism. The report demonstrated that traditional epidemiological methods of disease had been greatly underestimating mental and neurological disorders by tracking mortality, not disability rates, which it estimates accounts for almost 11 percent of global disease burden. The study concluded that the proportionate share of the total global burden of disease due to neuropsychiatric disorders is projected to rise to 14.7 percent by 2020. Following is a chart showing recent incidence rates in selected countries: Chart A: Estimated Number of Individuals with Autism in Selected Nations, 2007 (calculated from prevalence rates in some cases) COUNTRY China NUMBER 1,100,000 DATA SOURCE Peking Health Science Center (estimate based on official 2005 rate of 1.1 in 1000 children affected) India 2,000,000 Action for Autism India (based on an estimated rate of 1 in 250) United States 1,500,000 U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention ADDME Study 2007 and Autism Society of America United Kingdom 650,000 National Autistic Society 2006 (based on rate of 1 in 100) Mexico 150,000 Based on estimates by Ministry of Health of 2 to 6 per 1000 Philippines 500,000 Autism Society of Philippines Thailand 180,000 Estimate of the Minister of Mental Health In the search for Me, I discovered Truth.
