Guest guest
Thanks for your input ! When I first got sick and started reading Dr. Weil's books, I remember his strong caution against taking any steroid based drugs. He even cautioned against taking over the counter steroid creams. He has a chapter in his book, "Natural Health, Natural Medicine", on How to Protect Your Immune System. He has several guidelines, and he states that all of the recommendations he gives for decreasing your risks of cancer also hold for protecting your immune system. Additionally, he gives these guidelines: 1. Do not allow infections to persist. 2. Do not use antibiotics indiscriminately 3. Avoid Immunosuppresive drugs (more on this below, check out the bold highlights) 4. Avoid blood transfusions 5. Avoid exposure to radiation 6. Avoid exposure to harmful chemicals 7. Eat a healthy diet 8. Take antioxidant supplements 9. Learn about foods and herbs that enhance immunity 10. Work at improving your mental and emotional health. Here's the highlights from #3, avoiding immunosuppresive drugs in Dr. Weil's book: "Examples of immunosuppressive drugs are the drugs used in cancer chemotherapy and those used to suppress rejection in patients receiving organ transplants. Another class of drugs with similar effects is cause for greater concern because it is much more commonly used. It is the corticosteroids, or steroids, derivatives and relatives of cortisone in widespread use for the treatment of allergies, autoimmune diseases, and inflammatory conditions. I consider them dangerous drugs, much misunderstood, abused, and overprescribed. (Short discussion here of technical cortisone description, then continues with....) Steroids cause allergies and inflammation to disappear as if by magic. In fact, the magic is nothing other than direct suppression of immune function. I have no objection to giving these strong drugs for very severe or life-threatening problems, but even then I think they should be limited to short-term use: no more than two or three weeks. I deplore prescription of steroids for illnesses of mild or moderate severity or for months and years at a time. I have known them to be given to patients with mild cases of poison ivy, infants with diaper rash, and adults with back pain and undiagnosable fatigue. Steroids are terribly toxic, cause dependence, suppress rather than cure disease, and reduce the chance of healing by natural methods of treatment. Moreover, they weaken immunity. Even topical steroids are dangerous in my opinion. The medical profession is so unconscious of the hazards of these drugs that it allows steroidal ointments and creams to be sold over the counter. Many people apply them every day to skin rashes and irritations that could be much better dealt with by simple remedies. All of these products are absorbed through the skin to one degree or another, and all of them can suppress activity of the thymus, the lymph nodes, and the white blood cells. In summary, do not use steroids in any form until you have exhausted all other possible treatments. If you must take a steroid for a severe problem, limit its use to a few weeks at most." I found his book to be instrumental in setting me on the right path of healing. I highly recommend this book to everyone on the group. For those interested in the recommendations for avoiding cancer, they are: 1. Avoid estrogen replacement therapy 2. Stay in good general health 3. Avoid exposure to harmful radiation (there is no such thing as a safe dose of radiation. Never believe anyone who tells you that the amount of radiation coming at you from any source is too small to matter.) 4.Protect your skin from Ultraviolet (tanning) radiation 5.Avoid exposure to harmful chemicals 6. Do not smoke 7. Do not drink alcohol heavily 8. Do not eat carcinogenic foods 9. Eat a healthy diet 10. Take antioxidant supplements 11. Exercise! 12. Practice safe sex 13. Work with your emotions 14. Protect your immune system I love this stuff....Dr. Weil is one of my medical heroes. PattyJOSEPH PALANCA <juliejp61@...> wrote: Patty, you are so right. Guest guest
Hey, he covers all the bases. What a great read! Which book was it? I don’t use over the counter cortisone creams on my son's eczema. As I have read , this stops the body from doing its job of reacting and growing out of it, at the young age when they can do that. Thanks for the info RE: Re: Prednisone/Rogene, , Shari, Beth, anyone else? Thanks for your input !
