Guest guest
My son has never had self-injurious behaviors unless you count picking a scab on his arm. However, he has had undesirable behavior in the past which we sought help for. We had a functional behavior assessment/analysis done by a board certified behavior analyst. During the FBA two different BCBAs purposely frustrated him to see what would trigger the targeted behavior we wanted to work on. They say " behavior is communication. " My son was video taped and my husband and I watched behind a two-way mirror so we could see what was happening. After the FBA the BCBA gave us a report and suggestions/recommendations on what to work with him on. It was all about behavior modification. CReece **************Gas prices getting you down? Guest guest
I have posted about 4 times the problems I have with self injurious behavior and my child. I have had no help. I went to a gastrointerologist, I have gone to a psychiatrist, I have gone to an ENT, a medical doctor. I need help!!! I need to know what to do once and for all to help my child. He can't progress in school, he can't be around other children for long. He is 7 and this has only happened in the past year. It won't stop. I have heard of DMG, probiotics, etc. Doesn't anyone know anything to help me?
Guest guest
I wouldn't go by any of those specialists findings unless they are DAN practitioners or other doctors in tune to the specific needs of kids on the autism spectrum. I had the head of Texas Children's pediatric GI dept tell me nothing was wrong with my child but I knew there was - we went through Dr. Krigsman at the Thoughtfulhouse and my son had all sorts of GI issues diagnosed. Don't give up on fixing his physical symptoms - I would also find therapists to help you from a behavior standpoint as well. Hope this helps - Self injurious behavior...again!! Guest guest
Hi, My daughter can be very self-injurious at times too. She is behavioral alot. I thought for years it was because she was sick. But now I think most of the time it is communication (she is verbal) but she loves our reaction. And she is getting something out of it. Like an endorfin (sp.) release, ya know like kids who cut themselves. My daughter is with MHMR services in Denton country, they have contracted out ABA with UNT. So we have a couple of grad students working with us. Right now they are observing and taking data and trust me she has given them alot of data. By the way so have me and my husband. The best thing is that it has made me more aware of how we are reacting. The more we are reactive toward the behaviors...the more we see them and the more intense. I hope this may help. Best wishes.......I know hard hard it is to see our children hurt themselves. amom2amanda karirkb wrote: I have posted about 4 times the problems I have with self injurious behavior and my child. Guest guest
My son hits his head with his hands..sometimes a slap and sometimes a fist. It can be at any time. It can be quiet and he is relaxed and all of a sudden it starts or he can be in the middle of something and it starts or he can be sleeping and it starts. I lived in Pearland and now in Tomball. I need a DAN doctor. Can I afford that? Do they take insurance and if not how much is it? I am a single mom with three boys and the my 9 year old has Aspergers and my 7 year old is non verbal. He is the one hitting himself. DMG, magnesium, yeast, probiotcs...I have no idea what to do or how much to give or where to go. I feel like I know so much and at the same time with each new happening I again know nothing. This just started last year and was told it was sinus but it is not anymore. Someone guide me...please!! Kari Is anyone in Tomball experienced enough to watch my children for the rest of the summer and after school? I really need someone. Again...someone guide me!! > > > > > Subject: Self injurious behavior...again!! > > To: Texas-Autism-Advocacy > > Date: Monday, June 30, 2008, 7:13 PM > > I have posted about 4 times the problems I have with self > > injurious > > behavior and my child. Guest guest
ditto to some of below. mine chews on his finger. it's been knawed almost to the bone and has the appearance of a broken & unset bone - but it's not broken, it's just that the skin is ten times as thick now. sometimes he knawes related to stress and sometimes comfort - like a kid sucks their thumb. i have noticed over the years that the more we say, get your hands out of your mouth, the more he does it. what has worked better is to simply hand him an item that he likes so he's forced to remove the hand and then play with the item. also, i put gloves on his hands - leather, cloth, they don't taste very good so the behavior is reduced. i know a lot of people focus on eliminating food from the diet but i still say it's just as important to see what they are not getting. don't change it, just track the diet for several weeks and see if you notice when behavior gets bad or good compared to foods ingested. i'd also look into a neurologist. there may be some insight gained there as well. in houston, both hermann & tch have neuro staff but there's a waiting list. Guest guest
I know that there are some in the group that strongly oppose medication for behavioral issues. While I understand their reservations, sometimes it's to the benefit of the child. My daughter has had self injury issues since the age of 2 (she is now 10). We've used ABA principles for years, strict GF/CF diet, DMG, CLO, and countless other supplements. These can be beneficial for some kids, but mine never responded favorably to anything other than ABA, and even then the self injury never seemed to abate. When my daughter's SI behavior got to the point where she just couldn't seem to stop herself and I feared a detached retina or other serious injury, I found a good psychiatrist and started her on Risperdal. It did help. I am not advocating for medication, it is most certainly a last resort effort, but some of us are at the point of last resort. Read up on medications before you give them to your child. Understand that there are benefits and potential side effects. Make sure you consult with a psychiatrist that understands about medicating kids with ASDs. Guest guest
The main thing on these cases is to get a proper workup. Do NOT just start giving supplements, even though that might seem easy. Find a provider that you are comfortable with and take the DAN approach. I do not know where you live, but if you are anywhere near a large city, you will be able to find a provider that will aid you. You can contact me offline and I will help you find someone to get you a definitive diagnosis. Guest guest
Very true. and the self injurious behavior could have nothing to do with autism. it could be a completely separate issue - tourette's for example. although the drugs can change the child's personality, better to have a subdued child and a safe household than the alternative. Guest guest
Depending on where the hitting is - head - stomach - knuckles, etc.. Sorry most of the time its gut related. It could be uppper Intestine, small intestine, pain in the stomach, reflux, etc.. These kids are not hitting for no reason -- please look into some of the books out there. Your child is having physcial symptoms that need to be addressed. You need a good DAN DR - please don't give up, there is help now days. In the mean time - you can always give some good probotics -- thats going to help - no matter what. Does your child burp a lot? Distended stomach? Loose stools, color and form are important. Is your child even having BM's everyday? That can also cause lots of discomfort. What foods are eatten each day, wbat is he/she drinking? These are all important questions. What part of TX are you in? This will help direct you to someone who can help. Raise the head of your son's bed - slide a pillow at between the mattress and box springs-- just enough to elevate the head slightly at night. www.thoughtfulhouse.org -- they deal with lots of gut issues. Can you get your hands on some raw goats milk? From a local farm? this will help too. - In Texas-Autism-Advocacy , " Dr. Jeff Cunningham " wrote: > > The main thing on these cases is to get a proper workup. Guest guest
Aliza, I agree about the meds. My daughter does take respidol and now there are issues. Unfortunately the body changes and meds can take on issues. Example.........my daughter has taken respirdol for along time. She started showing signs of " tardive disconesha " spelling wrong? So we took her off but had to put her back on. Other meds didn't work. So then we added " cogenton " spelling again. Now she has been having a large spike in her prolactin levels to the point of her breast swelling and lactating.........we did go to a endro specialist and had a MRI which showed there wasn't not a putuitory tumor. Yeah... We cut back on the amount of respedol and changed birth control pills from Apri to Yaz...can only hope this helps! She is thirteen and it was hard to explain. She kept saying " my boobs are broken, make the leak go away " Now we sit in wait on the next issue that arises.. I am thankful that I am a true believer in Christ, I don't think I could get through this without HIM! amom2amanda alizaratterree wrote: I know that there are some in the group that strongly oppose medication for behavioral issues. Guest guest
I live in Tomball. Everyone keeps saying you need a good DAN doctor but no one gives any recommendations. I can't travel far because I have no help and I have to work. I have to get this under control. I have to find someone to watch my children after school and and school holidays and holidays like Christmas vacation.
