Hi to All!

We will be moving to Houston from Pennsylvania soon.  We have two boys 8 & 7

with autism.  I have tons of questions, but I'll list my top 3 for now :

1.  Which school districts provide the best for our children

2.  What type of medical assistance is available in TX? (i.e. in PA both boys

qualify for medicaid and it's not based on parent income.  Is this the case in

TX?)

3.  Where can I locate a key to all your acronym's (i.e. CLASS, HCS etc.)

Thank you for your patience with us newbies.  I look forward to hearing from all

of you.

Ana

Hello ,

Welcome to Texas. I also was new to Texas last fall, as I moved to San

from Washington State. As for the SSI, it will transfer, and the medicaid in

Texas should send you out a social worker to assist you with finding all the

services you need. He will qualify and that should be a big help for the first

round of physicians.

As for the school, they call the IEP an ARD here, and that was a little

confusing for me, but it is the same thing. I hope you have a copy of his

records, as that could be an excuse to slow down his services, and any way they

can slow it or minimize it, the districts will. It is all a money thing.

I have 4 special needs children, two of which that have Asperger's, 14 and

10 (within the month).

If you need someone to vent or talk... just let me know, I am familiar with the

territory. Good luck

Ria

[Texas-Autism- Advocacy] New Here Looking For Support

Hello,

I am mom of a beautiful boy almost 8 (in 3 wks) who has high functioning

autism. We are in the process of moving to Wolfforth as we speak. We are moving

from NM where my son got pretty good services for the area. He was in a regular

classroom with a one on one aide. It's in his IEP. I know that Texas has to

follow his IEP but I know nothing about the schools here or even the area so I

am not sure what, if anything we are up against. I am hoping the schools will

be willing to work with him. I am not familiar with Lubbock at all. He also

got private speech and went to a autism play group twice a month with other

autistic kids his age. He loved it.

We moved her with my girlfriend and she knows the area but nothing about the

services available. I feel like I am starting all over from the ground up. Also

my son get's social security in NM, will that transfer over in Texas? My

biggest concern right now is getting him in a good school system. I am also

looking for a special needs doctor and dentist if anyone has any advice on good

ones. One that also specializes in Asthma would be a huge plus as my daughter

has severe asthma.

K, well enough rambling for now

Thanks for any advice you can offer,

Brightest Blessings,
