Guest guest
The raw dairy arguments that I've been seeing sometimes seem to leave out an interesting, but very important, point:When a consumer buys raw milk, it does not necessarily mean they will or want to eat it raw. Perhaps they simply don't want it homogenized, and that is the only choice available. There is more than one way to pasteurize milk, and it can be done easily at home. One method uses lower heat for a longer period of time. The end product is tastier, and fewer damagign changes take place in the milk. Industry standard is to use high heat for a faster - and cheaper, process. (Incidently, the flavor of the milk is impacted so drastically by this process that when it was first introduced, it took years until customers accepted this " milk product " . ) The argument extends beyond government preventing consumers from drinking raw milk. They are also preventing us from deciding which method we will use to cook our food. Can you picture the rare steak police watching over you at your next bbq? An aside To Don, I apologize for failing to respond on list to your posts. I know what it is like to feel like you are writing into a vacuum. I appreciate your diligence more than you know. Guest guest
When the govt tests show positive for pathogen contamination, instead of telling consumers to destroy the milk, why not just tell them to pasturize the milk at home? Of course, they don't because the " destroy the milk " instruction reinforces the " milk is inherently dangerous " fallacy. It is a scare tactic! I am also wondering about the potential for false positives on these bacteria tests. It strikes me interesting that some of these instances of positive test results seem followed by numerous tests that show no pathogens. Meanwhile, a dairy's business and reputation suffer. How would we check on this angle? We don't need industrial processors to do the sterilizing job for us. Just like when they told us to start cooking eggs more to avoid samonella--consumers gladly followed that advice. The government never suggested to destroy the eggs!
