Hey guys, I am new here. I have been looking for a good surgeon to

explant in the Denver area. I have heard the names Huang and

Grossman mentioned a few times. Can anyone give me more information

on them? I would be willing to travel to find a doctor. Honestly, I

just want the best doctor I can find for explanting. Is it worth

traveling?

thanks,

kathleen

We're in Boulder and were also told to "live with" our son's asymmetry

at Children's in Denver. Their orthotist is not very sympathetic and

treats only very severe cases of plagio. His name is Greg Smidt and

when he met with him, he refused to even measure my son. So, I started

taking him to CT in Phoenix. Good luck and let me know if you find

anyone closer.

torticollis, mild facial asymmetry, but severe ear asymmetry.

Neurosurgeon at Children's told us to just live with it, it couldn't

be improved. We realize that there are many more severe cases out

there, and that the doctors frequently see much worse. Fortunately, I

only have to worry about my daughter. If there's a way to correct her

headshape, we feel like we should give it a try. The Cranial Facial

Clinic nurse said she will send us more information, but we also want

to know more about the bands they use, and anyone's experience there.

Thanks!

Hello and welcome to the group! I see that has responded

w/her experience which sounds pretty disappointing. I have one

other contact in Denver:

Hanger Prosthetics & Orthotics West, Inc.,

Denver, CO 80205

I'm not familiar with this location but perhaps you can call them

and set up an appt for information. Here is the email address of

Hi! I am in Denver also. I spent an hour with Dr. Handler and he also told us to

live with it. But I knew he did not support bands before I visisted with him.

We received our Hanger band last week for my 6 mos old boy. Helmets are not

common practice in Denver but we decided to do something before his head fused.

The address below is the correct one. Hanger is located downtown across the

street from Pres./St. Lukes. If you have any other questions I would love to

help.

Hi - thanks for the information. Have you had a good experience with that office? I'm a little nervous about the overall lack of enthusiasm for this type of treatment in CO. My daughter's plagio is fairly mild, but I want to be confident that the treatment will work the first time. I'm worried about trying something, then having to go try something else. Also, from the small amount of information I have been able to find, it seems that the Hanger band takes a little longer than the DOC band. Maybe the people posting about that band were just more severe to start with?

I can't find a picture of the Hanger Band. Is it the same as the Nic Band I saw on one site?

Hi Tammy,

I could not agree with you more! Children's Hospital in Denver is one

of the finest in the country yet they are so far behind in the area of

banding. It was also a huge disappointment for us. After we had a kind

of bad experience with the orthotist I mentioned at Children's and then

read about how orthotists do all sorts of orthotics for the body and

may or may not be experienced with helmets or STAR bands (STAR band is

what they use at Children's in Denver by the way), we just decided to

go with Cranial Technologies since all they do are bands and it seemed

like a lot of folks had good experiences with them. We were told that

in our son's case, a passive helmet (such as HANGER) would not be very

effective compared to an active pressure band, such as DOC or STAR. I

AM NOT trying to sell Cranial Technologies to you though. You have to

make your own choice as to what is right for your daughter and your

family. For us, it's a struggle to make the trips to Phoenix but we

decided early on that we'd rather do this once the right way during a

rather narrow window of opportunity for correction instead of taking a

chance with an orthotist who may or may not be able to help our son

with his mild plagio and facial asymmetry (a result of torticollis).

Good luck to you in whatever your decision is. I know it's not easy.

PS Do you know about Angel Flight? We assumed that we would not qualify

since Grffin's case is so mild but it may be worth looking into. They

provide free flights for plagio babies. I think there is info. about

them on this Web site and I am sure other members could give you more

information as well.

going to CT? Just curious why you decided to travel vs. staying

local. Right now I'm more inclined to make the trip as well, but not

sure.
