The Perfect Poem

Today,

I set out to write you

the perfect poem;

but without the usual comparisons

of body parts

to objects of nature or Heaven,

and without any length of measurement

for the time which love shall hold.

Then I realized

that I have been reciting it

my entire life;

within each beat of my heart-

silentlt rehearsing,

until the day we would meet,

allowing you to catch up with the verses

meant for you

all along.

Now that out fates have crossed,

won't you please rest your head on my chest

and listen?

Randy
