Guest guest
My daughter is 5 years old and has been diagnosed with high functioning autism. She has good language skills and play skills with other children. She really struggles with self regulating her behavior, transitioning, and sitting still long enough to listen. This Fall she will be in a bridge class to prepare her for Kindergarten the next year. She is emotionally not ready for a full day Kinder yet. I am thinking ahead for when she does go to kinder the next year and I am concerned with how large the schools are in Katy. We are zoned to a really good school in Katy, but each grade level has 10 classes and I worry that it will be too overwhelming for her. Her sensory difficulties cause her to have extreme meltdowns when there are too many people and she feels overwhelmed. I think she can definitely be in a regular classroom if she has some support and a good teacher. I am looking for a school that is not too big, the teachers are well trained with autism, and there is a good diversity of children. I feel like we are caught in the middle because she is too high to be in a special school, but she does struggle in a regular classroom. I will move anywhere in Houston to find the place that makes her feel the most successful. Has anyone had any experience with this or have any advice?
