Guest guest
Is she verbal? What is she doing with all her packed things? Can someone do a functional behavior assessment to try to see why she's doing it? If it's hoarding, it's like an OCD behavior, isn't it? Sorry with the questions, just trying to brainstorm. I think you'd have to try to get to the bottom of WHY she feels she has to do this; sounds like a compulsive behavior. -- Marie A.
Guest guest
Well she is not completely verbal. She does has some verbal skills. She has said New house once and swimming on another ocassion. She also mentioned a housing tract that we passed by last year on the way to her previous school. It's called Villages of Avalon. They have a water feature on the entrance to this housing tract. She also recently drew a picture that looks like a house we lived in over 6 yrs ago, which is in this same town but a few miles from this area. She must of been about 5 yrs old. She had know language at that time and very spacey. She was a lot worse off. It's so puzzling to me. We tell her this is our house and we will stay living here for now. This has not calmed her obsession with packing. Do you think she could remember that little house we lived in? How intresting is that. Oh and this place she went to school last year was only for a year and is about 30 minutes from where we live now and we have lived her for nearly 6 years. > > Is she verbal? Guest guest
YES! We have gone through this and still do from time to time. Usually it is just toys and her stuff, but I wait until she has left for school, but summers it was hard and I'd just hide it in the locked laundry room until I had time to sort. However, there were times she would ask for certain things within the bag and I'd have to help her find it. So I got to where I would put it in a dark trash bag. Fortunately she would forget most stuff, which is how I was able to clean out her stuff. Crazy thing is my mother is in a home with alzheimers and hoards. So bizarre the similarities in the two dx's. It does certainly get serious when a remote ends up in the bags. You are on the right path with the redirecting and not letting her hoard certain things, however if she hoards her own things, I'd let it go unless it gets too out of hand. Our dd often gets upset when I would try to redirect as she did when someone would accidentally knock over her " lined up " items as a smaller child. She also often chatters her way through it. Certainly times when she gets into her own world. Someone from her program mentioned its like a hoarding behavior. We are trying to redirect her to do more positive things but I'm just not sure it's working. Guest guest
Something could have triggered the memory. Perhaps a cartoon or maybe a classmate at school is moving? Our dd has never lived anywhere else. Just something she does when she is having a regression or stressed. Come to think of it she is 8.5 and hasn't done it since last school year sometime. Guest guest
Hi Regina, Your daughter sounds a lot like mine. My Kiddo will pack things into anything she can find. She seems to be very calm after she gets her fix. I also clean up after she goes to school. It's just such a pain. I got rid of a lot of little things from her room thinking this would make things a little easier. Hopefully it will pass. She has done this before and it stopped but it did not stop for very long. > > YES! We have gone through this and still do from time to time. Guest guest
Just curious about the PANDAS... what is this? I'm assuming it's not the Black and white bear from China, lol. Guest guest
Hi Theresa, PANDAS is an acronym for Pediatric Neuropsychiatic Disorder Associated with Streptococcus. Essentially what that means is that when the immune system is mobilized to attack a strep infection, an autoimmune attack is simultaneously initiated, which attacks certain parts of the brain. This results in an array of neurological, behavioral and emotional problems such as OCD, various tics and Tourette's Syndrome, ADHD, etc. The big problem is that the brain can be continually damaged by repeated attacks by streptococcus antibodies, and after each attack the recovery of damaged brain tissues gets more and more difficult. Just curious about the PANDAS... what is this? I'm assuming it's not the Black and white bear from China, lol. Theresa > > > > > > Hi has anyone experienced their daughter packing up the house?
