Hi ,

Thank you so much for sending out this message from your friend, JB! I would love to do a Breast Implant brochure with one full page of 'real life' comments such as yours, and JB's, included. I believe this would add a positive note, which we have been lacking in past years. Thanks again

I have

read that RA can cause neuropathy and am curious if any of you

experienced neuropathy BEFORE your RA diagnosis?

My hands fall asleep at night....does this mean I have p. neurothopy?

Does your pig need a brush-up in manners or obedience?

Or bored and wanting to learn tricks?

Hi Heidi:

Welcome to the group. It seems as though many people have their RA activated after some sort of illness. So it would follow that perhaps the peripheral neuropathy could have triggered something in your immune system. In any case, if you are not comfortable with the "wait and see" approach, I urge you to find another doctor, maybe a rheumatologist, to get another opinion. Sometimes the wait and see approach can just mean an unnecessary worsening of symptoms. If you do have RA, even though you may test negative, you want to get onto a drug regimen to stop any damage from occurring in your joints.

Good luck to you.

hello Heidi,

I do agree with Gloria, I was sick a lot last year with pneumonia and strep throat and this the Dr believes trigged the RA. My RA was so progressive at the beginning that I was near bed ridden and if not treated soon I would be an invalid now, the disease cannot be reversed if you let it go till damage is done so I have to agree to get a second opinion.

Hello Heidi. I recommend a different doctor. About 25% of people diagnosed with RA do not have a positive rheumatoid factor and I think a lot more have RA but are not diagnosed because they do not test positive. You need to get to a rheumatologist, and keep going to new ones until you find one that will treat you in a manner you find acceptable.

RA is a disease of the immune system and when any part of the immune system goes bonkers it can cause a lot of different symptoms as the body tries to restore the immune system to a proper balance. Thus if you have one autoimmune problem you are at higher risk for developing another. It is very hard to say what is part of one disease and when a symptom becomes part of a different disease. Any autoimmune problem can come first followed very often by any other problem. God bless

Heidi,

I totally understand the feeling of knowing that something is wrong within you but having everyone tell me that it's all in your head. I was sent to Mayo Clinic in ville and was seen by every "ologist" in their building, tested for everything they could think of, and when it was over, they found nothing, and told me that I should see a psychologist!

We know our own bodies better than they do, so don't take their answers and final. Keep going to other doctors until you find one that believes that you do know your body and work to try and help you.

God bless you and give you strength to endure the idiocy of the medical field!

Lise

-------------- Original message -------------- Thank you so much for your answers! You have really given me the confidence to seek a different opinion. I have seen so many doctors in the past and it has always been very discouraging. It took a trip to Mayo to really get to any answers at all. I do think I have RA and I think my original illness was an RA incident now that I am having more "traditional" symptoms. Hopefully I can FINALLY get to the bottom of this illness. It has been so difficult to know something is wrong and have everyone tell me nothing is wrong, you are just stressed out.

Marcia, It may be carpal tunnel, which my ra dr told me is very common with people like us. I was recommended to buy and wear wrist braces, not to do surgery, cause it causes more complications with RA and Fibromyalsia. Hope you feel better soon. I get that too from time to time. The braces help a lot. Wear them to bed especially. ~Marcia Stoyle <marciastoyle@...> wrote:

thanks, shelly! I have tried a brace at nite,

however, the fingers go numb as soon as I remove

the brace...also, as a school secretary, I cannot

type/keyboard with the brace. I belong to the

arthritis.org and they send a monthly magazine,

" Arthritis Today " . there is an ad from

amerimark.com, which sells a carpal tunnel relief

strap for $25. it appears to be a rubber palm

support, adjustable, fitting across the lowest

knuckles, and would not restrict finger movement.

I think I am going to order one - gentle hugs,

Marcia

Marcia, If you get one, let me know how it works for you. I am curious as to what may be out there to help people like us. I ran into a woman I worked with years ago, probably close to 10 years ago, and she had ra when we worked together, back then. Anyhow, I ran into her, and even though she is on remicade, her hands look like a twisted up mess. I felt so bad to see how much this disease has changed her in 10 years. She used to complain about her fingers back then, but dear God, her hands look horrible. I am not saying anything bad about her, but I just want to know, are we eventually going to look this way too? I have to know. ~Marcia Stoyle <marciastoyle@...> wrote:

Hi ,

If this co-worker had RA 10 years ago, she may have experienced

permanent joint damage before the newer, more effective treatments

came out. Remicade may be helping her to function now, but it can't

make up for joint damage that's already happened.

There's no guarantee how any of us will end up, even with the new

medications that we're fortunate enough to have. But if you've been

treated agressively from the start with DMARDs and/or biologics,

there's a better chance that you won't end up with the damage.

Have a great Thanksgiving everyone! I'm thankful that all of us

have found each other and are able to share, support and help

through the good and bad of this crazy disease.

hi, shelly! sure I will let you know, I did

order it yesterday, so with shipping and a good

trial, I don't think i'll have much to tell for 4

weeks or so, but I will get back to you!

speaking of hands, do you know the old-time

character actor, Carradine? (his son,

, was the star of the Kung Fu cowboy series

back around 20 years.) anyways, was in a

lot of the old western movies, and he had RA in

his hands. if you pay attention to detail,

you'll see in one Wayne western after

another, how he ages and how his hands changed.

by the time he was in " Cat Ballou " , his hands

were so bent up, he could barely hold the reins

of the horse/wagon. another star with RA was

Coburn...but his hands didn't seem all that

bad. hopefully, my enbrel will keep these

fingers straight enough so I can type messages to

you all. Happy Turkey Day! marcia
