Guest guest
Hello All, Seems like several of us have decided to bless our closest resorts, with our presence;) I had been having a hard time for the last 2 months. I thought I had a respiratory bug 2 weeks ago, with cough, fever, runny nose. Got a bit better, and then the night sweats came with a vengeance. I had an appointment with my rheumy,we discussed that the Rituxan wasn't working any more. She wanted to check all the usual rheumy labs. I didn't get to it until the next day, because I had to get to work. I got my labs drawn at 5pm,got a phone call from the on-call MD 2 hrs later, and knew that something was very wrong. My WBC count was very low,and my neutrophile(first line crime fighters) were almost non-existent. So I was instructed to pack a bag,go to the ER for a septic workup, and expect to spend some days in the hospital. All of this with the wonderful Real-winter weather in Seattle. Lucky for me I went to the ER I used to work in,and had my very good friend, take care of me. My wife,Darya, had this horrible look on her face. Fear. I have never seen this look on her face, ever. I got sicker with every hour, and then lost track of events. I had to have a spinal tap, which took 6 attempts. A combo of poor technique, scar tissue from back surgery, and a stupid nurse-anesthetist.My WBC count started at 3.5,by 11pm it fell to 2.2,and by 6am the next morning it was down to 1. I was on the super-duper,kick-ass antibiotics. I got 80mg of Solumedrol 4 times a day. Between the infectious disease doctor, hematologist, and rheumy, they decided that it was our friend Still's,kicking my ass. My counts came up,from the steroids. This was the first time in many years that I have been truly scared. I could see the fear in everyone's eyes when they looked at me. I kept thinking that if things continued as they were going,I would be in the ICU. My brain wasn't working,my thoughts were jumbled. Because of the weather,Darya had to keep everyone updated on the phone. So I am back on Enbrel, which worked a little bit. My rheumy wants to put me on Actemra, which the FDA has not approved yet in the USA. I will have to go on one of the IV osteoporosis meds, because of my thrashed esophagus. I am thankful for all the family and friends who helped me limp through this whole scary business. I am thankful that I have this group to help me,inform me,or just listen to me when I am troubled. I am sending all the positive vibes I have, to all of you. Merry Christmas,Happy Hannakuh, happy holidays to all of you,and your families. Sorry this is so long! Guest guest
Nissa, So sorry to hear that you will be in the resort for a bit longer. 7 days was plenty for me and glad to be home and back on track with my meds. My son is so happy that I will be home for Christmas, he keeps saying (signing) to everyone, " I got my Christmas wish, I got my Christmas wish. My dad is home for Christmas " . He is not usually one to show his emotions so I appreciate it more than ever. You take care and we will all have a pact that no one will visit the resort in 2009. Agrred!?
